Engine Installation

I have just bought a second hand engine for my 68 beetle. The transmission is the original, but the new engine is a twin port from a later model type 1. I have a few questions I need answering before I do the installation.

Q1.
I am reusing the clutch release bearing, but my manual says that it should have plastic face that needs to lubricated before engine installation. My release bearing just has a metal face. Do all release bearings have this plastic face and mine is missing it or is this just a different type?

Q2.
The clutch on my new engine from memory is different to the clutch on my old engine. I am unsure whether I can just install the engine as is or do I need to change either my clutch or release bearing or both.

you can't pair those together, that pressure plate doesnt have the collar for a non guide tube throwout bearing like your tranny has.
Just fit the pressure plate off your old motor and youll be sweet

sooooooo, which is the picture of the set up you are going to use??

the first pic has a late throw out bearing BUT it looks like it's missing a piece of the front, it's unlike any i have used with that stepped operating surface at the front??????

anyways, later style bearings DONT require the collar in the centre of the pressure plate HOWEVER it needs a sleeve/guide that mounts around the input shaft, that is not there!

the second gearbox pic is good to go with the early throw out bearing and yes will need the collared pressure plate as per your CB link photo..............you can remove and re install the collar from one pressure plate to another (with some time, skill and patience)

WORKS TOGETHER (early style)

well spotted Daimo, i didnt even notice the late T/O bearing, although i thinkthats the same pic just zoomed out

Sdat, yeah thats the kit you need, most good clutch kits now come with a new t/o bearing anyway so you can chuck the right one on
you just need a clutch kit to fit the early style non sleeved input shaft

good idea

abit off topic but i had a late 60s type3 IRS box in my black bug and it had the early throw out bearing but had the boss for a late one so i just tapped it to fit a late sleeve.
just noticed your box doesnt have it daimo?
guess it musta just been on the last of the type3 IRS boxes?
