PayPal Buyer Protection


Does PayPal Buyer Protection cover any item paid by PayPal or only items purchased on eBay?

In the last few weeks we had some p-ick rip us off for a purchase of $1009 paid with Paypal. The next day they bought $600 odd gift cards from Westfield, Wooloomooloo with our "Which Bank" Mastercard. We found the charges on our statement 2 weeks after the event and reported it to Commonwealth Bank and Paypal hence card was cancelled immediately. Within 5 days Paypal had investigated and notified us that the money was being returned. A check with the bank today revealed all was well with Paypal BUT the Commonwealth one (with the same card) is still in process.

Not sure where they got the numbers of the card but they used a new surname with a GMAIL account for Paypal.

With all this, Paypal seems reliable for getting money back in most cases if you are genuine and have all details.

Just read this and felt the need to comment:

A friend of mine purchased a supercharger from ebay - using paypal - and when it arrived it was completely useless. The rotors were scuffed badly and someone had even gone to the trouble of trying to file the edges flat. In the description it said "rotors turn freely with no signs of wear. So, we clearly have a case of "item received not as described". After many emails to the seller to obtain a refund turned out to be a waste of time, the next step was to escalate it to paypal, which he did.
Without going into too much detail...many emails and phone calls to paypal and written proof from a mechanic and they agreed that the item was "not as described" so they asked my friend to send the supercharger back to the seller, registered post and at his own expense. The seller did not collect the item from the post office so we had to send the proof of delivery to paypal that it had actually been sent back...

All well and good until paypal informed my friend that the seller had no money in his paypal account therefore there was nothing more they could do. So....now he not only did not get a refund, but he does not even have the original item to show for it and he's out for the extra postage as well!

Fortunately he paid paypal with a credit card so I think now he will be chasing the money back through his bank as a "chargeback" and should get it...but at the expense of no doubt being blacklisted by paypal in some way.

If you read the fine print in the paypal complaint and claim terms and conditions they "may" make a discretionary payment but this is NOT guaranteed, which clearly is the case here.

Sorry my reply didn't really answer your question after all that!
Paypal offer two different products for cover: 1: purchased privately but paid for using paypal. 2: purchased from ebay using paypal.
As you probably know....ebay and paypal are one and the same for all intents and purposes.

weeell I guess if it wasnt discretionary I could "sell" 6 crap superchargers to different friends er "customers" and take the money out of paypal, then they all get their cash back from paypal and I have made some easy cash to shoot up my arm. I wonder how the discretion works.

I have a friend who keeps his rta camera fines on the wall like trophies. He writes letters of sob stories. Sometimes he gets off, others he doesnt, even with his record. I guess it depends on who opens the letter. Didnt work for me the one time I got caught and it was an honest mistake. I must have got the hard nose bastard on a monday morning. I hate discretion.

I always wondered if it was possible to break into Paypal accounts.. now I know... lol

I had dealings with westpac and ANZ credit cards..

both banks fixed the problems...

Recently, ANZ cancelled Our cards/account and sent Us a new card and started a new account , due to someone accessing Our card.... account...

it was never shown on Our account... as that account was cancelled.. and it was never shown on the new account..

I sold My Lancer a couple of months ago and listed it on drive.com.au
Then I started getting emails where they wanted to give Me more money for the car, but I would need to send money to an agent overseas....

I ended up getting about 20 of those emails and they all had Gmail accounts- email addresses...
