Shift Pattern?
Did Aussie beetles ie ovals and 60's bugs come with shift pattern's on the knobs or was it a import thing?
If they did was it on the knob or above the ashtray?
anyone have pics?

My 69' Aust delivered was on the ash tray. Shift knob was nothing but gloss black.
That was many moons ago though, before i hacked it. It was orig as anything.

New engine in process: 94mm p&bs, 74mm C/w chomol Crank, 35.5x39 SP heads, turbo. Wierd combo, hopeful torque monsta! |

60s beetles had a black knob with nothing on them
it wasn't on the dash anywhere either..
ashtray had a knob on it...
from 1968.. knob disappeared from the ashtray and gear shift pattern was on the ashtray...
gear knob was heavier looking from 1968 on...
no bend in gearlever either...

The Aussie Deluxe 1200s and 1300s up to the end of '67 had mostly ivory gear stick knobs, with a slightly kinked lever. The only black ones I
remember seeing were on the 'poverty pack' Standards. West Coast metric also sells grey ones now, but I don't think VWA sold them here. The 12V
1500 from '68 had a chunkier shaped black knob, on a completely-straight lever.
Neither of them had the H-pattern on them, although the '68-on had a sticker on the ashtray, as noted.
For the pre-'68 Aussie VWs, the shift pattern was explained in the Owners Manual in the grey vinyl folder in the glove box. One you read it, then
drove the car for 5 minutes, you never forgot where the gears were!

You can buy US-style post-'68 knobs with the pattern embossed into them. The thread is 10mm so they only fit '68 on.
They weren't sold on Australian cars, though.
