Yes, Tony Draper raced a J and S buggy in the State Hillclimb championship with a Stan Pobjoy 1916 in the Open Sportscar above 1600cc class. I think that was about 8 or 9 years ago.

Maybe so Brian, but at least he went out and had a go at what he was passionate about and ran a vehicle that not many had ran before him. Further, that engine that Tony ran, I also ran it in my beetle and in 2005 with one of my sons driving beat all those other beetles and won the state hillclimb championship.

I run a buggy in khanas on dirt. They have a lot of potential, but the natural weight distribution of them is a real issue. If you want to be competitive, you'll need to basically throw away half the stock pan [or fit turning brakes]. You'll need to cut the rear torsion tube and move the trans and motor forward. If I were you, I'd also throw away the torsion bar front and fit struts and custom towers like Ian Swinkels car. Also, SWB cars have big issues with ackermann angles being all out of wack, which is probably why the buggy above was so slow.

You can make them work, but it's like Porsche starting from scratch again.

You could have a look at the Purvis Eureka in VWMA last year. He is making a go of racing a rear engined kit car, which is what a buggy is.

.... and they don't really fit into any class.

PM me if you want and I'll send you my phone no so we can have a chat and I'll talk you through it.
