Think this is a first
Hi all, just bought another kombi, but this has gotta be a first, I shall try to explain, I am 53 years of age and the first half of my life was about
VWS!! Back in the late seventies, I knew of a damaged red 74 kombi panel van that used to be used by the PMG, this bloke that had a large property
just full of old cars and trucks had this and other kombis amongst his collection, just rusting away, anywayz,
I tried to buy this kombi way back then but this bloke would NOT sell anything to anyone!! was driving past his yard the other day and noticed that
the yard was for sale and here he was (he is 80 now) with a monster of a tractor with a large fork lift attached, he was just loading car after car
onto the back of a semi then getting dumped at the scrap metal yard, My chevy somehow locked up on the brakes and I was allready walking over to him,
he takes one look and says "Not you again"! you still after that volkswagen? I was shocked!! anywayz, got the kombi home, noticed that the
carb/dizzy cap and instrument cluster are missing, bummer I thought as I wanted to know how many miles it had done, then I notice a newspaper folded
up under the drivers seat, the date was 1976
I am sure that I first tried to buy this kombi in 78! So what i am trying to say here is that I have a kombi on my hoist that probably hasnt many
miles on the clock before getting damaged and just sat around for all these years getting rusty waiting for me to come back and buy it. I am pretty
convinced that the motor has never been out of it from new, had a hell of a time trying to free up the rear brakes as the shoes were locked up against
the drums, even the gear shifter was almost locked up, I popped a rocker cover, clean as a whistle, but a couple of valves are stuck from sitting for
so long, but this van must not have any wear on any of its running gear!!
Motor is coming out tomorrow and getting stripped, will decide if I shall restore this van, hell of a lot of rust and a smashed right rear quarter, I
can cut all the replacement panels from my other kombis but wow, need to really think it through, anyways hope this made for an interesting read.
cheers Frank.

but wait, there's More
Thanks Folks, but like in the tv commercial, "But Wait, There's More" well there is more, MORE VWS!! The old fella let me go for a wonder in his
other paddock 6 acres with maybe 100 trucks cars & busses and ten foot tall box thorn bushes, everything just bought from the auctions and then
just left to rust away, walking through there or should I say climbing through there, I found one more bay window, and 3 splitty panel vans and maybe
a 4th but hard to tell as its well and truly inside a monster bush and all I could see of it was the rounded roof whilst i stood on top of an old
Dodge truck roof trying to get a better look around this yard. all the vws are from the PMG and the rust is just eaten through everything plus some
damn kids have thrown rocks through every window in the place. I have been promised the rest of the vws, but it could be some time before the big
block gets cleared and there is no way any of these dubs could be moved. I asked if I could come back another time and get some pics and he said not a
problem, I will also get some pics today of the red van on my hoist and post tonight, just need my son to reduce the size of the pics ( I am hopeless
with pc's) cheers Frank

Well, heres the Kombi panel van, even though the pics dont show it, there is a ton of rust, but under all that crud is some pretty pristine
mechanicals, infact, this car was only used for a very short period before it was written off way back in the seventies, have a close look at the
rear wheel hub, that centre nut has NEVER been touched by a spanner, that split pin is still the original from the vw production line !! this Kombi
is from a time warp!! just think, all the running gear is still like new! nothing worn out!! pity about the body, its pretty far gone. I am
handy with the mig but still having a think about it cheers Frank

Fantastic story mate, goes to show that they are still out there waiting to be found
Would be good to see the old PMG panel on the road, needs a bit of work but it would be worth it in the end.
Cheers

naaah let it RIP give it a proper burial. That is a major repair for anyone, let alone a backyarder. Its not jsut externals. You'll get some good
money for the uncut slider door though and the steering box will be worth a mint. Front end without worn bushes and torsion arms would be nice. Keep
all the locks and strikers. Reckon the engine would have to be screwed being open to the air all these years without moving. Even though its got no
kays on it, she's still gona need a full rebuild.

I pulled the twin port 1600 down after work today, cannot believe the condition of the motor, bearings all factory standard, crank looks like it just
came back from the machineshop, no wear on cam lobes & followers, still has the crosshatch pattern in the bores & only a whisker of surface
rust above the pistons on the cylinder walls, no cracks anywhere in the heads or block, flywheel hub like brand new & ring gear imaculant (spelt
that like it sounded)? ha, even the insides of the engine block are super clean. Only thing that caught my eye, was the pistons were low compression
with reccessed dome tops. Will still rebuild with all new parts including valve springs and maybe some 88mm jugs cheers Frank

Okay folks or is that volks? ha, anywayz, been back
to the auto& truck graveyard where I got the first red pmg van, I got to see the twin brother of the first red panel van that has been inside the
big shed for many many years, wow apart from one small bit of damage, the body has no rust !! 38000 ks on the clock from new. I will hopefully
get it out of there by christmas, ( lotta cars & trucks and junk to get out of the way) I went for a walk/climb and took some pics with my phone
of the other 3 splitty's and will get my son to retrieve the pics from the phone and post them for all to see cheers Frank

Just an update, yesterday (friday) was on my way to work and spotted the old guy at his gate, pulled up and had a chat, long story short, today he let
me into the big yard with all those old trucks & busses and 3 spitty panels. I turned up with nearly all my workshop tools, I figured that I had
better start pulling these splitties apart as I cant see any time soon where I would be able to get them out of there complete, I was pissed off to
see that two of the splits have been raided by the after dark scum!! Luckily, the third split was well & truly hidden by some massive blackberry
bushes and was missed by these scum bags. I spent all day removing bumpers & doors & other easy bits & pieces. Didn't enjoy grovelling
underneath to access the bolts to the bumpers as the grass is insane and I dont enjoy redbacks and other critters at the best of times! I was
surprised to see that the 1500 single port motor was still in this car and even more shocked to find that the motor was not seized, speedo reads 42000
miles and they are geniune. Tomorrow I will start cutting and removing all the good panels, eventually, these three spitties will be removed from this
property, but, in bits. Oh, & before anyone asks, the answer is NO, they are soooo far gone with rust, none of these splits can be salvaged!! The
58 split was the closest thing to fixing, but has its fair share of rust, plus some kids had decided to do some bum drops on the roof, infact the
bloody kids had destroyed every window in the whole yard. During the course of the day I hadn't seen a sharp bit of rusty steel and put a hole in the
back of my hand, so off home I went to stop the leak, lucky I had a tetnus shot maybe 6 years back, ahh, the fun and games with this Vw disease

Let me know about the dodge trucks,I'd be intrested in the right models no matter how rusty 60-70s d5n and 50-60'sdodge ram or power wagons.I'll
pay much better than the scrappers! After you get what you need think about all the other stuff that will be scrapped and lost forever at $42 a ton!
