LEXMARK X4550 PRINTER INK CARTRIDGE PROBLEM

I have a Lexmark X4550 printer which I bought new..

the original cartridges were replaced with new Lexmark ones
and then I refilled the original ones..
I have also bought New Generic cartridges which won't work..

I put the original cartridges in [now full of ink] but the ink level still showed they were nearly empty.
I had to use the color cartridge to print in color...

Now it will not print...
it says to reorder NEW Lexmark cartridges...

is there a way to confuse this printer??

it seems the cartridges will only work until they should be empty....
Is the memory in the Cartridge or in the printer???

Any Solutions????

LEE

I also have a Lexmark printer, an older Z42 (I feel some loyalty to Lexmark as they were once part of IBM). I have never had any luck with drilling and re-filling the cartridges - my printer still works but the jets clag up and/or smear. It's currently using non-genuine 20 and 70 cartridges that I bought on Ebay for around $25 each. Genuine Lexmark are around $60 each.

Not sure about later Lexmarks, but there should be an option to 'set' the cartridge as 'full'. Try right-clicking on your printer and select Properties. There's usually a graph showing how full the carts are. Somewhere nearby should be an option to set 'new' cartridge - it might be part of the 'test print' function.

Many cartridges contain a "chip" which tells the printer when it's empty and that it's a genuine product. Some refillers have the equipment to effectively reset the ink counters when they refill your cartridge. I'm not 100% that Lexmark use this technology but it's getting common these days.
My HP even tells me when my inks are supposedly out of date.

EDIT: If you print a lot of black you should consider a cheap mono laser printer. A brother HL-2140 can be bought for $85 and comes with a 1500 page toner cartridge.

Yes, the Canon printers seem to have the cheapest cartridges

although most are smaller than the Lexmark...

I used to fill My old 2030 Lexmark cartridges, and use them until they wore out...

I used to get maybe 4-5 fills with them....

as the cartridges just got too expensive...

LEE

PS: I bought My lexmark cartridges from the UK... E-BAY... Lee

yeah Lee it is really worth doing your research on inkjets. What seems like a good deal often ends up costing a small fortune to feed!

HI

HOW OLD IS YOUR CANON PRINTER MITCHELL??
DO YOU THE MODEL NUMBER?

ITS NOW COSTING ME ABOUT $60 EVERY FEW MONTHS AND I DO NOT PRINT MUCH STUFF OUT....

I BOUGHT THE CARTRIDGES IN THE MACHINE FROM THE UK..
AS THEY WERE CHEAPER..
THIS TIME FROM THE USA AGAIN CHEAPER...
SAVING ABOUT $20 A TIME...

I'M THINKING THAT IF I KNEW WHICH CONTACTS ON THE CARTRIDGE WERE THE MEMORY , I COULD TRY TAKING IT OFF???
AS I HAVE TWO CARTRIDGES HERE FULL OF INK BUT WON'T WORK... AS MY FAITHFUL PRINTER TELLS ME THEY ARE IN FACT EMPTY....:dork:

what model Rose??

I have always had lexmark printers and I used to refill them all the time..
but this new printer [about 10 months old] is too clever for Me.

The manager of Dick Smiths in Muswellbrook said they will no longer selling NON genuine inks when the current stocks are sold.
as most printers now have a memory on the cartridge...

cheers Rose...

HP Officejet All-in-One refill comes with a sticker to reset ink cartridge when you refill it
and the Canon printer still prints when it says it's empty so it doesn't matter about reseting it it's at home I will let you know what model it is when I get home it's a multi function one.
