Carbi's for 2lt kombi

i have a friend that at presant has the standard solex twin carbs on her 2lt engine in her kombi. They have been giving her nothing but trouble over the last couple of years to the point she wants them gone.

so my question is for a standard 2lt what would be a good replacement ? She is quite handy with working on engines and such and when she had a 1600 she used to do all her own tuning with no issues, since she upgraded to the 2lt she has had nothing but dramas. She had them rebuilt by a known VW mechanic and still they play up.

All she wants is to have an easy time, she doesnt care if she has twins or a single as long as she doesnt go down in power, her words.." a bit more balls would be nice"

ideas?

A set of 40 DRLA's or IDFs would be the go once set up
Dont fall for the single progressive trap on a type 4
Runners are WAY too long with no heat

For a stock 2.0-litre engine, stock Solex PDSITs are the only option as there no practical replacements. As Barry says, never use a single centre carb as it won't work. Those hottie aftermarket IDFs etc would work if the engine had the cam, porting, big valves, free exhaust and so on to match. But on a stockie - nope. Expensive overkill, and no performance advantage for the RPMs a stock engine pulls. Plus they don't have chokes - how will they start up now that it's cold? And being twin carbs, you'll be forever trying to tune them.

The stock system works best because it is designed for the engine. It's not really a 'twin carb' system at all - it's actually a single twin-throat carb that is divided into two! The left and right carbs are different - the left is the 'master' carb and the right is the 'slave', and they 'talk' to one another via a carefully designed system of balance tubes - even the air cleaner is part of it. The stock system has not one, but THREE idle circuits that all work together. The beauty is - if it's in good condition and set up properly - it keeps working and you can forget it.

The problem is getting it set up. Normally the only thing that goes wrong is that the throttle spindles wear - there is slop at the carb when you open the throttle; sometimes you can even wiggle the spindle up and down. The solution is to get them rebushed - any carb specialist can do that for you, and replace the diaphragms/gaskets at the same time.

A detailed story of how to properly set up the stock system is here - which I hope answers all your queries.

Persist with the stock system - VW knew what they were doing.

If you really want to throw away the stock manifolds, carbs, balance system and air cleaner, CB Performance sells a 40IDF Weber kit for VW Type 4 for US$759.95:

http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=493

You'd at least double that (in $A) to land the kit here.

Remember that Kombis have a vacuum brake booster so you need to add plumbing for that - good luck.

36 or 40 DRLAs you will notice an improvement..

less than 3 idle systems = less than three idle systems to stuff up.
