Front speaker positiions in a Superbug L/1303.
Hi,
I decided to splash out and bought a new Kenwood CD player with Bluetooth and USB for Olive. At the moment it's running through a pair of boxed
6x9's behind the rear seat. It sounds great. 
Now I want to fit a pair of front speakers. I have a set of 4" Phase Linear 100w splits I would like to use. They are 5cm wide from magnet to
mounting plate and the covers are 13cm in diamater. I took a door trim off today to have a look, and I'm not sure I can fit them in the round hole
below the winder handle. It looks like they may just foul the winder handle. The problem will be even worse if I have to use spacers to ensure they
clear the doorskin. (Placing the tweeters won't be a problem.)
I don't want to place the speakers where the stock door-pockets are, as that would require new door trims to make it tidy. Besides, I like the
pockets.
Are the kick-panel mounts some people use my only option? Do they fit an L okay?
Any other suggestions? Maybe door pockets from another car that have built-in 4" speaker mounts?

Brett,
I installed a kenwood system in my beetle last month and used the kick panels from classic Vw. They look and sound fantastic as long as you insulate
the kick panels with good sound proofing material.

Thanks Paul. I like the pods, but I have a few concerns:
- Will they fit an L with the dash that comes down lower than a regular Bug?
- How much footwell space do they use up?
- Do they come uncut or pre-cut for 6" speakers only?

Will they fit an L with the dash that comes down lower than a regular Bug?
That I don't know however they are fairly easy to modify as they are made from fibreglass but you could check with classic about it. On their website
says 1948 to 1979
How much foot well space do they use up?
not too bad however my fright foot does rub against it but you could push them in further if need be.
Do they come uncut or pre-cut for 6" speakers only?
They come uncut so any speaker up too 7 inch would fit

Kick panel are definately the way to go.
supers and standards have different wheel wells so theyre not identical but you may be able to make them work, I havent looked into it, I just made my
own.
But if they fit an Sbug itll also fit an Lbug
I've tried all the speaker locations over the years and in the doors is hopeless
Not only from a sound field perspective but speaker treatment too.
no matter how good the seals are there will always be moisture there after rain unless you live at alice springs
speakers dont like being slammed shut all the time too and the wiring to them is a pain
I got enough wiring already to the doors with central locking and power windows without dealing with all the wiring for splits as well
I did have them in fibreglass pods on the doors at one point but they get in the way
much better front sound field with them in the front

I'm fairly sure the kick panels in mine are from classic and they fit great. This is the only photo i have of them and its to cold to go outside haha

Hi
I had them in old 1302 and now in David's 1303, I have a set for my new 1303 as well.
The ones in I've used are ABS plastic, I've pulled the all the rear deck out of David's 1303 at the moment and just using the front speakers only,
the sound is still good.
The ones in my 1302 (see photo) were covered in carpet.

PS, forgot to say that they do cut down marginally on foot room, but David has size 13 feet and he manages OK.

Okay, you've convinced me. Speaker pods it is. 
I've already sent an e-mail to Classic to check if they fit an L. Might even order a console and CSP or Trigger shifter from them as well.
That Classic website is evil I tell you. Objects you never knew existed suddently become completely irresistable....
