74 Bug 1600 mileage question


hey all,

so i did my first FULL fill up since getting the car.

i did the following the day i got it, so as to set a pretty good benchmark.

* valve clearance
* timing
* new plugs
* new points
* new oil

so i am getting 11.2L / 100km. Seems a bit high to me, but as mentioned in other threads, i will be putting in my new SVDA dizzy in this weekend, which hopefully will solve the flat spot issue.

have pretty much been doing city driving though did do 100kms on the freeway (100kmph)

be interested to hear your thoughts. Might be right im not sure.. i do know that my carby isnt running as well as it can be, because when you screw the mixture screw all the way down, it certainly doesnt stall, in fact, you cant actually notice the difference...

new carby to the 34 pict 3 will be the next upgrade i do.

250 to 300 miles per tank in ours .

My Scientific Publication or wahteverput it at 25mpg - which is about what you are getting

For what it is worth i have ALWAYS got the same mileage
1600 stock
1600 w/- dual webers
1776 with dual webers
1916 with 34 pict
1916 with dual webers

Only the fun changes

I get 12L/100 in true Sydney commuting and i get 8L/100 on say a cruise having fun on the hills

I can get 6L/100 on a winters night drive to Bathurst from Sydney if i behave

Check your speedos against those 5km markers on the freeway
One of my speedos was onlt ticking over 4kms

Yes, seems a bit high
but a 009 in city driving will do that...

also, I find a big difference in fuel use between 80KMH and 100KMH...

but the SVDA will help.. as they are so smooth...

If You screw the mixture screw all the way in and nothing happens... then the end is broken off...
Just replace the screw... should be easy to find a new one..

and You will find it WILL make a Huge difference in fuel costs

Geez I only just finished typing this same post on thesamba.
check your mileage against a GPS, VW odometers never read perfectly accurate after 36 years
Not one of the bugs Ive owned has had a 100% accurate odo, best I've managed is the one thats in the bug now which reads 9.5kms for every 10 driven.
worst one was 8.2 to 10 had me scratching my head for ages but its the plastic drive cog that splits, you will hear your speedo make a click noise every KM or so if its got a crack.

round town 1600s for me always seemed to average 10L/100 and down to 7.5-8L on the highway

two things

Speedo and carb/tune issue, you said it yourself, engine should die when mixture screwed all the way home. May be semi siezed in the bottom of the thread and your not feeling the bottom. If it feels vague at the end but is getting tight, take the screw out, lube with wd40 or grease even but a spray of wd will help clean out some gunk. Refit and find a positive stop to the screw without forcing anything to damage the needle's seat or anything. Then start and tune, beginning 1 and 3/4 turns out from the bottom, also check the engine reacts properly, then find the sweet spot......
