What additive do you add to petrol ?
Hey guys.
Well as stated above..
What additive do you add to petrol ??
Just got my new 1600 twin carb and wanted to know what you guys add to the normal unleaded..
I've been running just normal unleaded yesterday and a little this morning but want to get ontop of it ASAP.

question..
From what iv seen in the past 5 mins.. 98 and a additive would be the go ?

its 98 and an additive for me all the way. hell its saved my engine once already as it was running very lean at one stage.

I personally dont bother with an additive, but from previous experience flashlube will help with valve guide life.

makes me laugh the way people piss their money away with additives
what hardly anyone realises is USA has not had leaded fuel since the late 60s/early 70s so alll vw twin port heads were made at the factory to run on
regular unleaded
Only time its an issue is if the heads were rebuilt at some stage with very low grade seats which generally isnt the case
if it makes you sleep easier put the additives in but if your cooling system is all in check, timings right and carb's sweet a stock motor will be
happy on reg unleaded.
My first original 1600 which i built over 12 years ago now has done 60,000+kms as speedo cable was snapped for about 6 months and has only run on
straight unleaded except when it was supercharged then i ran 95 in it and it still has perfect compression and runs beautifully.
thats a stock motor though, anything better run premuim but fact remains due to it being a slower burn you need to set the time to suit otherwise its
gonna run like crap

[size=4]Normal unleaded is being phased out very fast..
what was known as E10 is now being labelled as Unleaded + Ethanol
and My standard beetle engine doesn't like the BP product..
There are some Shell servos in NSW still selling "normal" unleaded which is what I've been running in My beetle..
I have never used an additive for valve lubrication...
I know many VW owners do... and it can't hurt..
as Lead was a lubricant back in the Leaded fuel days..
so, I would agree that a valve lubricant can't be bad when using ethanol petrol...

Inside my fuel flap it says to use 91 oct Ron, now I have no idea who Ron is or even if he once owned my car but I generally just use regular
unleaded!

RON= research octane rating.
dummy terms just octane rating. Unleaded is 91 ron, but it does vary from pump to pump depending on age and quality of the fuel being sold.
I use premium which is 95 to be on the safe side.

I mostly use flashlube - just from a 'windex' type squirt bottle - one squirt per L works about right - and mostly 95ron but sometimes (again,
mainly on the highway) 98ron.
I don't worry so much around town, but if I am working it hard (like on the highway - especially with the trailer full of tools on), I make sure I
use it.
I find the higher octane gets much better mileage on the highway, but doesn't make much difference around town.

unleaded is now 91 Ron... or octane rating
it used to be around 89 ron.. which is NOT enough for a beetle.
I was always going to fill My tank 3/4 full then top up with 95 Ron or octane.. but never did,.. lol
but I used 95 or 98 for a few years... then found 91 ron was OK
until they added Ethanol to it...
so, its back to 95 Premium...

it was 97 ron at the mobil in my town. 96 ron was the lead replacement fuel they sold for only about a year and a half. then it was replaced
completely by 91 ulp

Mine also says 'Unleaded' but it is a very late model with factory FI and BTW the RON remark was actually a joke. Sorry if you missed it.

Well i baught a bottle of the flash lube. i wont be using the kit i was thinking i might just have one of the little squirt bottles in the boot and
give it 30-40 ml before i fill up a tank of premium 98 ... That should be ok yea ?

yeh thats exactly what i do mate.Although now that im on apprentice wages
i might have to occasionally change back to normal unleaded instead of premium
im not sure about else where but it is marginally dearer here.
but its all good.

Vicelore, best if you read the instructions for the FlashLube, you will probably find that the mix ratio is 1ml per litre. Otherwise you are wasting
it.

If its 91 RON Without Bio or ethanol....

but ethanol is another problem....
shop about, the smaller servos still have NON ethanol unleaded

Same here with 95 or 98... EXPENSIVE..
one day it was $1-46 for 95 Shell... YIKES...
Now there is still a very small servo in Town with the original NON ethanol unleaded.... $1-28 a liitre..
so that is what I'm using with FlashLube..
ethanol 91 RON was only $1-14 a litre in Newcastle during the week.... in the Suzuki swift...

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, run the flash lube, i know it works, both of the engines in my cars have had hardly any wear on the
valve guides or seats when they were stripped down.

I run 95 RON + additive. But I was told that ethanol will destroy older fuel systems over time due to being more corrosive, so I only use it under
extreme circumstances (ie nothing else available). By the way, is this correct?

I too would like to know this baghall. A mate of mine was over on the weekend and asked what fuel I used in the wifes VW. I told him the cheap stuff
and he suggested that I use the more premium fuel for the very reason that the ethanol corrodes the fuel lines, etc on older cars. Any educated
opinions?
