1978 Mk1 golf GLD....
While my 2 door mk1 16v is off the road at the paint shop, Ive been sitting around board out of my brain needing a vw fix! I always search for mk1s
for sale because i know finding a decent mk1 is hard, and i didn't want a full resto job like my other mk1 has become just something already clean
and tidy. I've been searching for around 4 years for a 2nd mk1 as good nick as my 2door and i finally found one, up here in QLD mk1s are few and far
between at the best of times.
Picked up a 1978 mk1 GLD (1.5l diesel) genuine 150.000kms or so (old speedo stopped working), from a old fellow that has spend alot of time and money
keeping her in mint condition. Everything works and i mean everything and no missing trims or should say no cut up trims for speakers haha. Engine was
rebuilt due to cam belt snapping, new diesel pump and injector nozzles, rebuild box new clutch, she starts first key every time and hasn't missed a
beat. Theres not many diesels around these days the young guys pull them out and put in petrol engines, lucky im past the young and dumb days keeping
it all original is more my thing now ( within reason)
Here are a few before and after pictures and a list of what i have done to bring the GLD into the current euro look, still a little more work to do to
get it up to my satisfaction but so far so good.
What i have done so far.
* hottuning coilovers
* rota jmag 16x7 wheels
* brand new front/rear bumpers
* changed grills
* brand new duckbill
Still to come.
* front sway bar
* new dashboard
* stealth stereo system
* new guard spats

Was this for sale over at vwwatercooled?
It showed itself to be a very genuine car from the photos and its sounds (from what you've said) to be a real gem.
Hows the torque from a diesel of that size?
Btw Im young and would love a little diesel golf.
Looking forward to see the work you do on it, as a fellow golf owner (MK2).
Oh also please put as many piccy's up as you want
Ill be watching

Yeah mate thats the one! the owner had a few people look at it with no sale not real sure why maybe scared because its old school diesel or being a
old car. My mate had a mk1 diesel for years never broke down, toque is great goes up and down hills easy, ive driven a couple std 1.6l petrol golfs,
the 1.5l diesel is not far off one of them she gets along just fine.
I seen your mk2 looks nice and clean
on another note im looking to bring the GLD out to Warwick this year my other mk1 is way off from being ready i raced it back in 2008 been keen to
come back out ever since

a small (and I mean small) turbo and intercooler would give it a lovely lift in the performance stakes you know.

Funny you should say that, my mate has a genuine vw turbo setup that came from a overseas model that bolts up to mine. First he wont see it and 2nd
the turbo is fixed to manifold and the turbo is stuffed, but i have my other mk1 to go fast in

Ive probably said it before but I love the old IDI diesels and the fact that its in a MK1 makes it so much better::
