Tamworth Hillclimb Results & vids

Well another great days racing was had up here at Tamworth on the weekend with the beetles really showing the rest all about horsepower and handling.
The day looked very dodgy and the first run was in the wet with us all tip toeing around the track.

After that we encounter a few scuds of light rain but mostly a dry allbeit cold day.Heath Christine and myself had a fantastic battle all through the day with the 3 of being seperated by mere tenths of seconds all day.

Final times were.
1st in class Heath ftd 36.92
2nd in class Col ftd 37.21
3rd in class Christine ftd 37.66
4th in class Glen ftd 41.31

Just to put thing in perspective,
Heath 15th outright out of 47 starters & 5th quickest tin top.
Col 17th outright out of 47 starters 7th quickest tin top.

Some footage.

Col,s fastest run of day

Congrats to Heath to taking another class win.
He is proving very difficult to beat in that very rapid orange beetle.

On the contrary, we have Glen in his steroid-powered beetle or is that haemorrhoid-powered?

It has been brought to my attention by other forum users that the word "steroids" has been used when discussing the engine in my yellow Beetle.

This may lead casual observers to believe that my car has a 'steroids' engine installed.

This would be incorrect.

As many people know, Stan Pobjoy is highly respected for building far more powerful engines than mine for competition (and road) use and although the specifications have gradually been updated over the years, these have often been referred to by Stan and his customers over the last 20 years as 'steroids engines'.

However, my car is fitted with a Stan Pobjoy 'base' or 'Stage 1' street specification 1916cc engine optioned with a dual ignition system.

This engine specification uses Kadron/Brosol 40mm single-throat carbies. The heads, although machined for 1916cc configuration and second set of spark plugs, are standard dual-port/1600cc with standard valves and no porting or reworking.

With the exception of tinware, this 1916cc engine is EXACTLY as is supplied to any other customer, with 12 month/20,000km warranty. This engine covered 5300km in my road car before being installed in my yellow car, that will be known to readers of VMA Magazine as the 'Wrecker Racer', now with fresh paint.

The gearing in my car now is standard S-Bug (IRS) with the 4.1 diff.

So all in all, as readers of VMA would know from my "Wrecker Racer" series of articles last year, my little yellow car is little more than a well-prepared street car with the interior ripped out!

I am quite flattered and proud that the strong performance of my street-spec engine may have been confused for that of a dedicated competition engine, such as those installed in other Beetles in the under 2-litre Improved Production class. However the reality is far more modest!

This Hill Climb class is good fun and all those in it at present - Colin, Christine, Heath and myself - always have a great weekend.

I hope that now and in the future, this clears-up any misunderstanding.

Thanks for the clarification and thanks for the info on the Stan motors. No need to preach to the converted here.

Can we rename the 'Base' or 'Stage 1' The Haemorroids, after all is does rhyme.
