Heads !!!
Im running the 044 ultra mags on my engine now. I reckon there are high 11s in this combo with a bit more compression.
Im interested to get opinions on what is the next step in heads from here. Theres the real high end full on race stuff (pauters, autocraft etc...)
then a raft of other castings in the middle.
Which way to go ?? I want to keep it street legal, so they need to be able to cool as well as make HP !

JPM MS230 heads from Sweden?
http://www.jpmotorsport.se/e_default.htm
The 'bigger' heads all loose cooling fins I understand, and as such are all out race heads. The JPM heads have 9 cooling fins.
Does NZ have a free trade agreement with Sweden? I know Ian (2443TT) was hit with imports etc etc bringing a set in to Australia...

No free trade agreement with sweedan im afraid. I was hit with an invoice for import duty and GST after the heads arrived. Basically you add 25-30%
to the purchase price. They really are awesome heads though.

Whoops, ultra wedgies I meant... No duty on parts here as we dont have a vehicle industry to protect, but (lucky us) GST is cranking up to 15% on the
1st of October !! Hooray !!
I had thought about the JPM heads.

I would say Johannes MS230 heads are one of the best for street/drag, but don't dismiss Pauters, Don has them in type 4 on his daily driver Ghia,
speak to them both.
Question is are the rest of your engine components up to the task of coping with the increased flow of whatever head you choose, no point spending
that kind of money without blueprinting the entire engine assembly including some creative friction coating, also lightening and strengthening
rotating parts, etc.

Get yourself a boogie board bag and you'll be good to go!!
The other way to go might be hand ported heads like Steve Tims signature welded heads, a lot of guys in the states seem to like them. Don't know
what the turnaround time is like but custom porting might get you a bit more since they should be able to make them to fit your needs.

The handported option is always a good one, but it has been my experience that the results may vary. Ive had two sets of hand ported heads, the
runnout on seats, lack of any spring shims, spring seats machined undersize - not exactly ideal results. One set I spent another grand sorting out the
issues with them - maybe Im a bit anal on it, but I havent had much luck. If I go down this route Id keep it local.
At least with CNC ported heads you know there will be some work to do to optimise them, and they are a known quantity.
Engine is completely blueprinted, wedgemated crank/ flywheel, thinking of shorter stroke bigger bore option, maybe 78mm x 4" bore.

The next step i would consider is cutting the manifolds, and porting them internally.
Most likely the port flange is larger than the middle part.

That is definitely the case, one thing we were going to try on the dyno was porting another set of manifolds. Dave had said to me he was wondering
wether the "venturi" was there for a reson in the manifold ?
From what you are saying I would likely see gains with this ?

Certainly.
There should be a gradual transition
from the top to bottom of the manifold.
The "venturi" you speak about is probably only there because the manifold may be too thin otherwise.
Yes, the job may require some external welding.

DRD L8 4" off the shelf, cheap enough to work on, if you don't wanna spend a bomb. Basically a 4" comp elliminator.

Westi,
Are you saying that the manifold should have a slightly larger opening at the top than at the bottom whee it meets the head?
Cheers

I have heads that were done by Dave and Judy Kawell on my new Unlimited street engine ( turbo) and they look beautiful. I do plan to drive mine alot
on the street and have already tested it out in the race car( 6.46 in the 1/8th @ 3000 ft elev) . I have seen many Street Eliminators with dropped
seats so I would be shy of them. The castings on mine are 044's. I think that how high you run your compression and how far you drive it will
detirmine which head you can run on the street. On my partners new engine ( unlimited street) he is using my Superflows w/ 48x40 valves, but we only
have 8.2 compression and will probably drive no further than 35 miles at a time on his. The MS230 heads look pretty nice to me.
