There is no one 'originial' Herbie as Disney used lots of Beetles over the four original movies, probably 50 or 60 or more. Not all of them survived
as some of the stunts destroyed the cars. However as the ad says, there are at least 23 surviving original Disney film cars left. Yes, this is one of
the surviving genuine Disney cars and yes it was on display at this year's VW Nationals alongside two replicas.
It is a shame the owner, Alex, is selling it. It was used in the 3rd and 4th movies (Monte Carlo and Bananas). It has the fake external fuel filler,
used in the plot of Monte Carlo when a diamond is dropped into the tank. Alex also has a replica of the film diamond! This Herbie was also used in the
fourth movie (Bananas), and the sides of the engine compartment have been cut right away to allow the pivoting wheels used in the bullfight scene. As
you can see the nose has also been bashed in. The sunroof is not original - Disney made up a dodgy wooden frame and cloth roof that you can see when
you look inside. The inside is painted grey, as were all the film cars, to stop the studio lights reflecting. This Herbie was restored in the US a few
years ago, and tricks like the remote control bonnet, swivelling headlights and water squirter, were added. Alex bought it and shipped it to
Australia.
Genuine Herbies from the original first movie are rarer and much more sought after. Their stripes are a bit different - the blue is lighter and they
don't cover the rear air intake grille. Greg Carr in the US used to own the most desirable Herbie of all, the one from the first movie with the
Porsche Super 90 engine, Porsche brakes and roll cage.
The Herbie in the Wolfsburg museum is from the second movie, Herbie Rides Again, and is slightly the wrong model. Herbie is supposed to be a '63, but
the Wolfsburg museum Herbie is a US '65, with bigger windows.
Lee the one pushed off the ship in the fourth movie (Bananas) has never been recovered and still sits on the bottom of the sea, somewhere off the
coast of central America.
