Tar Mats - Leave or remove

I 've been doing some reading lately and have just stripped the interior of my bug. I have the tar mats still in there and found a few methods to remove them like dry ice, heat guns etc, but they all seem a bit of a hassle. Is the stuff OK to leave in place and work around or do you suggest full removal, replacing later with something like Dynamat?
