Pedders Shocks

Looking into new shocks, didn't want to spend too much, and I found the Pedders Sportz Ryders.

Has anyone got any sought of experience with these shocks? They cost $127 per shock, which I think I can get down a bit,

But yeah does anyone know how Pedders go?

I have had Monroes on the car for a few years now and they are about had it, they were pretty good when new though, but with these ones I shouldn't drive too much on rough roads, beaches, 4wd tracks etc... like I did before (ah P plates....)

(greg/happy daze if you see that Vid do you think it has the LSD?)

Cheers

Dunno about Pedders at all really - used to run KYB GR-2's on my BJ IRS, and recently gone to Bilstein's.

(KYB's may be up for sale btw - PM me if you're interested...are you Paddington in Sydney, or Paddington in Brisbane ??? )

Watched the video:)

Yes, I do think it's a LSD - if it is you're very lucky.

That's salt water that you're playing in! Makes bolts & nuts rust and difficult to undo, doesn't it? :grind:

I had a pair of gas sports riders on the back of my first 76 bug. They were fantastic. Car handled like it was on rails. But that was 20 years ago

hahaha, the thing with my current monroes is, they were fantastic for about 12 months I reckon, and then they weren't so great... or maybe I got used to the, I had GT-gas at the back and normal at the front, I figure with the sportz ryders it should be a bit better, but I don't know how much Koni's or Bilsteins cost yet, so can't compare, I really want to get Bilsteins if they are the right price.

There is no comparison to Koni. Pay for quality European Dutch developed and made product and you will receive the appropriate quality. They are for life. They are adjustable. You can have them rebuilt. Not a throw away item.

Lots of variables, wheels, tyres, driving style and type of roads, std or hipo???

But the short answer, forget the pedders, if a budget set is what your after go with Cofap or Boge for a stock ride, KYB for hot street; if a few more $$ can be spent Konis for adjustability, Bilstein for a more HD style. Boge or KYB should be under $200 a pair, Koni/Billy's for under $400 a pair.

I've got a pair of pedders gas shocks
I only had them on the front for about 30 minutes...

YIKES.... hard as...

I have monroe oil shocks now..
a bit shorter than normal and they are OK..

I don't like gas shocks on the front of a beetle
not enough weight...

but they do keep the front up.. gas pressure..

Yes, I should have said that while I had the Pedders gas sports riders on th rear of my 76, I had Monroe hydraulics on the front. Like Lee said, not my weight on the front, so no need for anything too heavy duty.

This car could leave loads of people behind in the twisty bits, but got smashed on the straights and up hills. But that was a hp issue.

Proven Products used to be Koni dealers. They would re-build them too. I think they are still around.

Hey 57Oval,

Do you know how much it cost to get 4 shocks in from the US with those guys? With the exchange rate it is only $300 AUD for a set of 4!!! :smirk: plus shipping i'm not sure but it wouldn't be too much more than $500 AUD for the lot I'd hope

I remember i payed around $450 2 years ago compared to $380 each from the Bilstein dealer in NSW.

I have had a set of them in my 64 notch for over 20 years and they are still good today.

I tried the Pedders shocks when i got my oval back on the road, i paid $150 for them and wasted my money, never again.

pedders do have a touring shock option which is comparable to a more standard type shock and they feel really good in the beetles front or rear. they go for $144pr and have an australia wide warranty (parts and labour), not like all the others which are a "back to base" warranty.

The fact that it's 'front or rear' tells you something....the front should have lighter valving than the rear due to the lighter vehicle weight...face it, Pedders sell rebadged/painted cr@p that is not correct for our Volkswagens. Go with shocks that work...Nakata, Cofap, KYB, Boge, Koni and Bilstein.

Time to seal this thread, ordered 4 new Bilstein shocks from the company eshocks, to get the 4 delivered in 3 days was $323 USD, so about $370 AUD.

Fairly cuffed, and they should be good for wakefield in a few weeks, thanks 57Oval for the referral

Cheers
