Dwell vs advance angle


Are the dwell and advance angles the same? I have a strobe light - can I tell what the advance angle is with that even though I don't have a degree pulley?

Dwell angle on a 4 cylinder engine is 50 degrees

you can check the ignition timing with a strobe light if you understand the OEM pulley marking system

the dimple on the outer edge of the OEM pulley is TDC

dwell is the time that the points are closed. Its just a different way to set your points.
You use a multi meter to check the dwell and it may vary due to worn dissy shaft.
Advance is either vacuum or mechanical
Vacuum advance is on Cruz to give you better fuel economy
Mechanical is on take off to give you more power.

You use the dwell meter to set Your points...
although I haven't used My dwell meter for probably 20 years..lol

the strobe light will show Your distributor advancing..

but You really need a pulley with the degrees on it to see the degrees...

or measure the degrees, off a degree pulley and mark them on Your pulley
say 28 degrees.. 30 - 35 - 40..

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll set my points to 0.016" and double check it with the multimeter then.

It's a bummer I can't check the advance without a degree pulley then...

I can run a tape measure around a degree pulley for You and take pics...

its a bit difficult for You to mark the furthest advance on Your pulley when the engine is doing 3000 rpm... lol

You could put a few marks with a white pen etc..
until You find the correct one and measure from the TDC mark and I can tell You what degrees it is...

Thanks for going to the effort!
Perhaps you could give me the length of the green arrow (30 dgrees) and if you can 32 degrees too? Presuming the flywheels are the same diameter and my high school maths if correct, the chord length should be the same too!

Hey mate, thought this pully chart might be of intrest. print it out line up TDC with dimple on the stock pully and file notches where you like. I usuall mark BDC for adjusting valves and a 30* mark for timing. Its good to check the stock notches on a stock pully just to see what you have too.
