The Right Window Winders for 1970 beetle
I bought a set of window winders of ebay about 1year ago for my 1970 beetle.They were new and were great until now,every time you shut the door the
knob flies off.I know its a small detail but god its annoying.
I was wondering if someone could tell me what the original 1970 model winders look like and i will try to match them as close as possible,when ii buy
a new set.This time with top quality.

They were a black plastic coated, textured metal arm with a black knob with a 'tooth' grip around the outter edges of the cylinder of the handle,
just like the edges around a 10c piece.
If i find a pic, i will post it up.
Not as hot as the 67 and earlier ivory/chrome stylin though.

the winders have a small screw holding them on...
Your screws may have fallen out...
the ones in My chromed non vw ones have a black allen key screw in them...
will take a pic later for You..

PS: I think the genuine vw ones - the screw is covered by the plastic cover,,,....Lee

Lee is on the money, the screw connecting the arm into the winder mechanism in the door is hidden behind the black plastic taht covers the 'metal
arm' of the winder handle.
ie: hidden screw.

Yeh,on mine there is a screw holding the arm to the door.Thats all good.But on the little knob in which you hold to wind it up
only has like a little pin that pushes into the arm piece.Not a screw.Becuase there is no thread you
can just pull it clean off.(the knob)

I had that issue with mine when i bought the car. If you look into the knob there is a little metal rod that moves around, this piece comes unstuck
and itll never stay on.
Best thing i did was buy some of those ones with the holes in the arms, cheap brazzilian ones i think havent missed a beat yet

yeh that is EXACTLY what is happening with mine.Yeah i thought of that mate,but i am trying to keep the original look.Thanks though,your explanation

Hi
Your winder winder mechanism probably needs lubricating or turning over.... if the gear slips...
You drill out the rivets..
turn the gear over and re rivet or screw etc...
winder will work great again...
Yes, I have nice chromed ones with holes in them...
original 68 ones had a chromed back with a plastic cover..
old Ford solid window handles also fit on with a screw...
much stronger... lol

the exact reason I put power windows in, got sick of forever breaking winder handles.
even those knobs break off those chrome aftermarket ones

I agree, the standard winders are a pain in the side. I've ditched mine, makes for much more pleasant driving

The current ones i have are in the middle pic.I suppose in the grand scheme of things winders arnt much in a restoration.I might just have to looked
around until i find the right type that im after,for my style.
While im here,could anyone suggest a good place to purchase door cards,i want them to be of good quality as well.?

Folks..
Your window winder mechanism and bailey channel runners need to be looked at...
My windows go up & down very easily...
window winders were lubricated... grease & oil...
new bailey channel was widened so the glass slides up & down without binding...
I widened the bailey channel with a chromed Hook made for hanging plants.. in Go Lo - Big W etc..
where the channel is too tight slide the curved hook into the channel and twist it so the channel is widened...
there is steel inside the bailey channel...
so it stays widened... just so the glass slides easily..

TMI door cards are the Best... made in the uSA..
different colors etc.. excellent quality..
Classic Vee Dub plus other VW shops would all have them..
You can get cheaper ones that are usually black and are OK

Cheers for the advice, however my issue is with the plastic fantastic that after time, doesnt hold it's shape and the pin in the knob always
dis-lodges. Cheers Though.
