The sprint was excellent fun.

(Copied from the 3 wheels post under Circuit Racing)

I got to the track, well the queue outside the track, about 7 am and pulled up directly behind Jak's beetle. It was interesting to compare the two cars. It was the first time we've parked our cars together since Jak painted his gunmetal grey. His paint job is much darker. It's more sinister with the window tint and the black racing wheels.

After scrutineering Jak and I drank our strong coffees and had a couple of cheese pastizzis. Then a third VW turned up owned by a guy named Troy (I think). His nicely presented dark green beetle apparently has a fuel injected 1955cc engine which sounds sweet. He and Jak were in the blue group.

All up there were about 100 competitors. The field was made up of Lotus Elise/Exige, Triumph TR7s, MGs, Morgans, Mk2 and XJ6 Jags and a wide variety of other British cars, one of which was the same brand as my coffee machine, a Sunbeam.

I was in the white group. White was the slowest group and there were 2 or 3 white groups and about 40% of the competitors were in this group. With 16 cars on the track each time there was a lot of traffic. On my second run I got caught in a queue of 9 cars within a lap. So I dropped back to about 40 kmph let everyone get ahead, then gunned it into the final few turns and gave my lap time a good wriggle, but I caught an MX5 in turn 5 which killed my exit speed.

For the next 2 sessions I managed to be at the front of my group and got a clear run. Nobody caught me all weekend.

Unfortunately I couldn't crack the 2 minute mark. I think I did a 2:00.6, but I'll have to wait for the Natsoft results do a bit of analysis. My previous best was a 2:00.3 in the Dutton rally which came on a day there was no wind and I was really comfortable with the car having driven it solidly for the previous 2 days of the 3 day event.

I'm not sure how I can gain six tenths without going out and buying a limited slip diff, but I want to try a few tweaks to the suspension, maybe the aero and I think I need to do a few more laps of the circuit. I was doing turn 4 in 4th gear which allowed me to go in faster but it meant I was exiting 5 at about 4200 rpm in 4th which seemed a bit doughy. I tried changing to third between 4 and 5 but gave it an over-rev. I used to do both corners in 3rd, but I think I'm going to quick for that now. Hmmm. I need to time which is quicker somehow.

What a blast though. It really gets the adrenalin pumping, even in a car that doesn't feel like it has that much power. I managed to spin it 180 degrees at turn 6. At least I was trying. I think I gave it a pretty good crack.

Best of all the car had no problems. The oil catch can managed to solve any breather issues. That was the problem that cut my last run at the creek short.
