I nearly bought a couple of them last year...
were on ebay all the time... different lengths..
would be easy to fit anywhere....
I have a couple of truck power steering oil coolers to fit...
about 25mm thick..

umm truck power steering oil cooler, i suppose u can use anytype of cooler. what model u using, i check em online. u know anyone else that has used
them before sucessfully. thanks lee

these are cheap on EBay at most times..??
small and larger ones, but always thin...
190mm x 300mm x 20mm thick
I'm using one of these at the moment over My fan intake which I will be removing and placing under the car shortly..

thanks for the pics lee. i didnt realise until i saw them this was the type of cooler u were talkin about. i can fit something like that in, even tho
it would be side on to the air flow . i was thinkin of the type that would have direct flow of air around them, like mounting the truck ones
vertical, for this i would need a long narrow type like a rotary mazda. i am still exploring teh inline finned type and most likey will give one atry.
cause they are only 85mm diameter so it fits in nicely.

Yes, I reckon those round ones would fit just about anywhere..
and no pressure drop as they are in line..
could keep added them until the engine gets cool enough... lol
I don't know whether to add cooling fans to these flat coolers
like 100 or 120mm 12 computer fans??
I have an oil cooler smaller than that large one but triple the thickness.. they were supposed to fit behind the fan housing but they don't .. lol
I did use it for about a year sitting on top of the fan housing
with the engine lid open....
when winter came.. I couldn't close the top of the engine lid

my bro has a mercedes one under his split. Muller puts em on lots of his customer's car. apparently cheap and cheerful.
BTW, an engineer friend of mine was telling a few years back about roadtrains crossing the nullabor. They were having massive gearbox failures all
over the place on them and couldn't figure out why until they did some maths. They found out the trucks were running @ 100% power load 100% of the
time for something like 12 hour stints. To put this in perspective, V8 supercars run about 90% power load some 80% of the time for a similar period.
After they put sensors in all drive train, they found the trans/diffs were the dying due to over heating. So they put oil coolers on the trans and
diffs too. Suddenly, the oil tempt dropped 10deg celcius and the problems miraculously went away. So a few degrees can make a big difference and at
the end of the day, the oil does more of the important cooling on a VW than the fins.

You rekon something like that would be easy to adapt to a stock kombi transmission? Does it even have an oil pump or is it just a 'slosh' style oil
system?

Unless you're planning on using you're car under extremely high low for very long periods of time (as Pete mentioned over) I don't really see the
need for it.
Kombi gearboxes are how old now? 30 years minimum.
And how many of them do you think have died from heat?

Yep, as Pete said above, the Merc cooler is very similar to the RX7 coolers of old, just not so deep, may fit perfectly, would work HEAPS better than
thoseinline jobbies....they're quite useless imo.
