Whats to do in Darwin??

Hi guys,

Heading up to Darwin for a friend's wedding tomorrow, and will have a couple of days free for "playtime".

Anyone got any suggestions on things to do / where to eat / what shouldn't be missed etc? I've never been up there.

Any suggestions appreciated

Kris

There's the markets on the beach, forget the name but ask and you will find out from one of the locals or any Ausie with a better memory than me) It's a geat market with all types of food and local products and everyone (almost) goes onto the beach to have a drink and watch the incredible sun set. Lichfield national park is a must though not strictly in Darwin it's not too far out of town, the highway out of town is itself interesting as it follows the old airstrip from WW2, looks like another road alongside the highway with pis of the planes that used it at intervals along the way.
Last time I was there I found the taxi drivers were a bit of a hoot, one older ladie driver I spoke to told me of an incident after her husband died, "he woodn buy a decent @#$%$ car so once I had his &^%$ money I went and test drove a ^%$#@ monaro, the @#%#@ salesman didn't want me to test drive it so I told im if I'm gunna buy this @#%$@ thing I'm @#%#^* gunna drive the ^%$#@ first so he came wiv mie an then had the @#*&@ hide to tell mie not ta drive it like I waz an I told im I need ta know it goes like I'm @#%^# gunna @#%$#@ drive it so just shut the $#@& up, you wanta to come wiv me so shut the @#$% up. Boy did ee get a shock when I pulled out the foldn stuff an told im I wanted that one, not anuva one, and I'll pick it up %$#@& tamora, that ^%$# him."
One of the highlights of my last stay there I rekon, she had me laughn so much we over ran my destination so she shut the meter off and gave me a short off the track tour back to my destination then came in and bought me a drink.:lol::lol::lol:

^ Mindil Beach markets - great spot to watch the sunset and have dinner. If you've got time, a daytrip or an overnight stay at Kakudu is well worth it. Else Litchfield NP, whilst no Kakudu, is still pretty special.

mindell markets are the ones donn, is talking about. but i think you could get up there and fine it a ghost town as it almost the end of tourist season up there.
the main street is nice to wander up and down with lots of watering holes.
damn i wish i was up there always loved winter up there.

Your close Lee but not quite, it's a GREAT city
Oh and there's the crocodile display attraction in town bit touristie for me but you can climb into a tank and get in the water with a bloody big croc, also there are a few aboriginal artifact shops, avoid the cheapies though, one I stoped at caused a bit of embaresment for me, looking at an unusual boomerang hanging on the wall when the shopkeeper came up behind me and asked if he could be of any help, I said "sure, if you know anything about this abo stuff" shoulda turned around first, he was black as but had the bigest smile on his face when he said," yeah, know a little bit", ended up going back there a few times over the next week, realy interesting bloke to talk to, thats one of the best attractions for me, the locals, you can meet and talk to tourists anywhere.

Hire a car and get out of town. Litchfield pub is a good drive, cold beer, good food. Litchfield National Park is a great place for a dip, normally no crocks and some great waterfalls. there's always markets on sat and sunday with plenty of weirdo's to gawk at. Adelaide River(the town) has a good pub with an awsome feed, about an hour south of town. then there's always Corroborie Lagoon for a spot of fishing, i would advise you to hire a boat here as there is some big handbags around at the moment.

I'll try to avoid that if possible!! Got up here just after midday, lovely 32 degrees, not too humid either which was a plus. Wedding tomorrow (strange I know), will head to the Mindel (?) Beach Market its on Thurs til 10pm, then gonna check out some of the stuff above Fri and Sat.

Thanks for the suggestions guys,

Kris.
