1956 typeIV build
hey guys, after the long wait due to complications we finally brought my 56 home today. here is a progress video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u6fysjaiRw
ok so heres the story, It starts when my dad was a lad... he met the local vw mechanic, kevin. anyway after years of owning volkswagens and driving
them my dad formed a good relationship with kevin, when the shop was still open (it shut down about 3 years ago) me and my dad went in one time, i
remember that i wasnt really allowed to come into the work space but this time i got a peek in there. There sat in the corner of kevins workshop was a
gutted looking vw beetle, my dad told me it was special but how would i know!. Fast forward a couple of years and ive caught the bug! so i thought if
im going to do it for the first time lets do it with style!
After searching the web and looking through the classifieds with no luck i thought i would quiz dad about that "special vw" and as it turned out
this special beetle was an oval, which my dad had tried to buy apparently. so i thought there was nothing to lose and rang kevin, it turned out he was
thinking of selling it.. What timimng!.
we went to have a look at it and the offer was to good to refuse, the deal was done and $2000 was withdrawn from from my bank and proudly put in
kevins hands.
the body and most panels had been hand sanded down ready for priming but never was primed. so crap loads of rust built up. it came mostly complete but
not assembled. First im going to get it licenced and drive it around, then save up and do the full paint job and restoration.
Wish me luck!

Look's to be a good solid car , well done , hope you have all the guards etc as oval parts are getting hard to come by !!!!
Don't let body work get in the way of real suspension travel

Nice job so far!
I know what you mean about parts being molested. I'm rebuilding (insert: "at a snail's pace") a 57 Oval too. Sourcing replacements can sometimes
be either tricky or costly (or both) but hey, at the end of the day its another oval back on the road which must be a good thing
Can't wait to watch your progress

Update
this is an awsome way to dry a heater channel out when in the middle of por 15 process. update this channel has now been painted... i know that this
may look like a botch job but for now i just want to seal the metal up and get it passed over the pits

well not much progress so far, being 14 has its bad points im not getting enough money! and if i work more then i will have not much of a life. so the
cheapest way i can get a restored car is to just save up and get it painted and do a body off resto all at once.. it will take me a while to save up
but are collection of vw's lacks a restored one.
there is a pic showing were some guys have drilled some holes to mount a sun visor

Good to see another 56 making its way back onto the street, keep up the good work.
Mine started off the same colour (summer blue) and condition, a bit of elbow grease and it will be a great car again, see my thread.
Cheers

dtm has arrived, fully sihk!
hey guys thanks for the nice comments.. yes i can see why people usualy start this sort of resto when there a bit older, its hard work! and as far as
work goes, i went on a holiday and had to cancel a few shifts so when i came back they only gave me 3 hours a week! my bullshit siren is screaming. so
because of the lack of money the progress aint going to fast
SO onto the fun part, pictures will tell all

we used jake rabys kit because it provides even cooling to all 4 cylinders, another personal reason is that theres not many around australia, and
everyone uses the porsche stile which is now sortoff getting boring. oh also compared to most of the porsche stile kits this is pretty cheap

Nice go for 1911cc if you can use the 66 stroke crank from the 1800 and use kb 96mm pistons run a web cam 494 grind and for heads go for 42 x 36 mm
valves and seats with single heavy duty springs and cromoloy retainers, set compression at 8.5-9.0:1 and your off to a great start. I got a 2056 to
build and my 2270 to build also all parts from my mate Jake Raby, been to his shop twice now and worked there both times. any questions just ask me,
be glad to help.
