Cardboard gasket for sump plate
Good Morning all,
I need to do an oil change, and was planning to reuse the oil strainer after a clean, so I was thinking it was a bit of a waste buying a kit just for
the cardboard gasket.
What do you all do for your gasket? Does anyone just make one up from some cardboard lying around the house?
Ideas and wisdom appreciated.

You can buy just the gasket kit without the filter.
If I don't have a kit handy, I just wipe the old ones clean and then use "permatex" on them.

I have just done mine, had a slow leak from that area so I replaced all the copper washers and did away with the large gasket altogether, just used
some non hardening sealant, fixed the problem totaly except for a very small leak coming from the drain plug, even though it has a new copper washer,
next time I do an oil change I'm going to use the sealant on that washer as well.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

You're not supposed to replace the oil strainer, they last the life of the car. You just rinse it out in kerosene at every service and dry it
thoroughly. Oil change gasket kits cost about $5 and are available from any VW parts shop. Only get the good German-made ones. They should include
copper washers for the sump plug and all the sump plate bolts, plus two big paper gaskets, one to go between the case and strainer, the other between
the strainer and sump plate.

Hi Craig,
You buy an oil change gasket kit.. or 5 etc .. lol
I always buy them in bulk as I never go to VW shops..
I usually buy them when buying other parts.
part number 113 198 031
contains two gaskets and 6 copper rings and a sump plug washer.
the small copper washers usually get pushed out of shape so cannot be reused..
I never have any problems with the sump plug washer leaking.
I always use permatex non hardening Gasket cement on the gaskets..
