Hi

In a previous life this car was sports sedan running a 12a rotary motor

I've been busy on the pan.

I had to call on expert help from Brad a Westside mufflers to weld up my alloy mirrors after I cut the attaching legs off. The mirrors need to be painted with rest of the car so Brad kindly fitted this fiddly job into his busy schedule. It was made fiddly because these early Falcon GT replica mirrors appear to be die cast and were bitch to weld.

I'm using the stock mirror mount holes and using cutdown stock mirror stalks, this way I can change mirrors without having to drill new holes in the door, I ran the same mirror stalks on my old yellow bug but with XA falcon mirrors.

You are definitely a thinking man Steve, good idea. Great to share all these little tricks with others and with a smear of filler the mirrors will look like they were factory made for the car :tu:

Thanks for the comments guys.

I may have forgotten a few colours, black, Mercedes silver, apple green, CTs silver, vermilion fire, Suzuki GTi yellow, phantom purple.

The Porsche blood orange is very close to looking like vermilion fire that was used on Falcon GTs in the 70s

The wheels are Simmons OM or open mesh.

Hi

Pissing down today, cant do much on the chassis because Davids bug will have to sit in the rain, so I went to visit the bug today. That's the problem with a small garage.

I'm fitting air con to the car, so the inlet grilles were welded up as well as the LHD wiper holes. The extra holes in the bulkhead is where the stock dash fan will draw in air.

Hows this for a rust free air box? I'm going to use the stock air box drain tube on the evaporator housing and I've fitted a smaller OD drain hose in case any moisture gets into the air box.

Hi

Still working on the pan, had a bit of a setback, the reinforcing that I planned to add to the lower part of the torsion bar tube makes it impossible to get the gearbox in or out, I need to rethink this with maybe a bolt in section.

Had a win, I hooked up the shifter to the G50, apart from needing to slightly straighten preset bend in it it all fitted up without any shortening or lengthening of the shift rod.

All the panels in are in primer now, the shell needs a few more days on it then it will all be painted. I had a test paint swatch made up in blood orange, looks good.

A bit hard to tell from the picture, Steve, but that looks a bit like my old Sports-Sedan colour. That was 'Tangerine'. It'll look good.:tu:

It could be verging on old #92s colour, I held the sample swatch up against Dave Birchalls orange bug today and the swatch looked red next to his car.

I think it will stand out.

Hi

After I got back from Boris Picnic I did some work on the pan. I relocated the brake master cylinder 30 mm to the drivers (right) side, this gives me enough room to fit a clutch master in next to it.

I now have to move the lever on the brake pedal over 30 mm as well and fit rose joint attachment to the clutch pedal to operate the clutch master cylinder.

wonder where you got that idea from :tu: oh, shame all i can find of my original idea is a rough, i mean rough layout in a notepad, i doubt many people would read it easily too, the pedals are the next fun bit, mine are getting close-ish to finished for the last time, gotta love the evolutionary process of this stuff :smilegrin:

oh, it looks like you may of but im not sure, did you drop the centerline of the MC's down about 10mm?

Hi Dave

I think we came up with the idea at the same time. I kept the standard height for both the master cylinders.

I'm either going to weld on a lever for the brake master like you did or I was thinking of cutting 30 mm out of the horizontal tube and then rejoining the 2 bits, this would move the brake master operating lever into the correct position and then run spacer between the clutch pedal and the narrowed brake pedal, Im just going to run a simple clevis on the clutch pedal.

I kept the master cylinder centre line the same.

What are the extra holes for Steve? I kinda wish I'd done this on mine after all the hassle I've had running new lines, balance bar etc etc!

Hi Rich

Extra holes, I used this plate as template when drilling the others, that hole lined up with a stock master cylinder hole, this with clamps held in place for drilling and welding, the big hole on the bottom is for the hard lines to feed back into the car.

How did you prep that little area below your rear window with the vents? I considered drilling out the spot welds (all 500), prepping and tacking it back into place but that seems like alot of extra work. Not to mention that if I get that alignment wrong my deck lid won't ever sit straight.

I nearly have the pan done, then its on with the body, then a hood lining and then Westi is going to do a 3 inch exhaust for it, then see the engineer to get it ticked off before he retires.

Hi

Thanks guys, Kev you should ahead of me, your car is at home.

I'm having a bit of spurt at the moment, the engineer who has passed 3 other WRX bugs and has been looking after mine is retiring soon, so I just want to get it up to blue slip stage and then finish it as time allows.

I have been neglecting all household stuff so I'm not popular, as they say the amount of of shit your in only varies in height, I'm nearly drowning.

I did the ratio calculations on the Porsche G50 gearbox I'm using, they are nearly identical to my sons R31 Skyline, 1st through to 4th are nearly identical, the G50 5th is little taller. The R31 has an excellent spread of ratios, 1st is very tall and all the others are very close so the G50 should work well.

Been doing heaps of work on the chassis, its nearly done, just fitting up the 944 handbrake cables, 944 rear sway bar mounts and I'm running a tube through the tunnel for a Morse accelerator cable.

Thanks for encouragement guys.

Still working on the chassis.

I had Brad (aka Westy) weld some fittings on the tank. 1/2 outlet and and 2 x 3/8 return lines into the tank, while he was at it I got him to fill in the LHD part of the tank for some increased capacity, I think maybe 2 - 4 litres gain.

I bought this tank from a wrecker in about 2002 for my yellow bug, it was a genuine VW German replacement tank that looked almost new.
