Very tricky. I wonder which manufacturer will take this up.
Bit of a safety issue I would have thought - if you can't open the door without power etc

i like the skirt idea
i would be very worried in a crash, if the car gets a little crimped the doors will be worse than useless, even the jaws of life will struggle to open
that kind of door. even a ding in the door (a size 10?) might compromise the operation of the door!
but like most designers they live in the "perfect" world!

Nice idea for a show car, but way too inefficient for a real-world car. To reinforce a car structure to take a door like that would require a weight
penalty of at least 200-300kg by my guess, as well as a rather bulky sill and the fact that you need at least 100mm of room under the internal floor
for the door to swing into. The KISS principle says no!

But they were a half-height door that drops down vertically into a very high sill, rather than swivelling under the car.

Much better for the strength of the body, as with the sill that high it would be stiffer than a regular door opening.

Are you sure?
Current 4-door sedans have quite heavily re-inforced A and B pillars to allow heavy doors (complete with electric windows, speakers, electric
door-locks etc.) to hang out at 90 degrees with people pushing up and down on them.
You would lose that weight and yes, you would gain some weight in the sills, but this could be useful anti-intrusion reinforcement.
Overall passenger cell rigidity could potentially be improved. And, since your handle is waveMAN1500, you're possibly not thinking about how
positively this would rate with the fairer sex, especially those with ankle biters, due to the easier access to to the seats.
I reckon it has a fair chance to become a real competitor.
