This is a 1969 model.

Hi
most beetles in 1968-69 were white...
I can't remember seeing a beetle that color...
remembering its a long time ago.. lol
it could be an Australian only color too...
check behind the spare wheel to see if there is a color paint sticker there....

Australian 1968-69 VWs came in a choice of five colours - Diamond Blue, Kings Red, Regatta Blue, Savannah Beige and Lotus White. Kings Red was Dulux
code 11234.
Kings Red continued into 1970 but was replaced by Radar Red after 1971.
It's possible that it's a Nissan colour rather than a Volkswagen one.

It is the original colour. It has the paint code there.
Inside the bonnet etc is in excellent condition.
Outside is,.. well,.. old,.. and the guards have been repainted at various stages in its life,.. so it looks quite tired. Being a red car it looks
worse.
Because I don't recall ever seeing another one this colour I was curious if this was limited to 68/69 1500 bugs.
So thanks to all for your posts and knowledge.
I can imagine a nice shinny example of this colour in a 1500 bug would look great.

Balm and Dulux are the same, Lee!
BALM was incorporated as British Australian Lead Manufacturers Pty Ltd in 1918. It looks like they were set up as a Dulux subsidiary. They remained
the same until 1955 when they were renamed Balm Paints Pty Ltd. In 1964 they changed again to Balm Paints Ltd. Paint chip colour cards of the time had
both the Balm and Dulux logos on them. The Dulux company removed the Balm name in 1971 and thereafter were just Dulux Australia Ltd.
It's probably no coincidence that Dulux's Australian head office is at Clayton, Melbourne. Dulux has also made paints in Australia under other names
too - Dulux made Walpamur, Berger, British Paints, Cabots, Intergrain and Feast-Watson.

Yes red 12-volt Beetles were rare in Australia, as experience showed that our hot sun made the early paint formulas fade. White was by far the most
popular colour here. There are photos of the Clayton line in the late '60s and early '70s showing nothing but white cars on the line. So yes the red
'69 is quite special!
