Josh

Mate, as far as I can tell the 914 engine is pretty much the same as a type IV bus engine except

1) The engine number is stamped in a different location (up near the flywheel rather than behind the fan)
2) The oil filler neck is different to make it easier to top the oil up (the 914 is mid engine)
3) The cam is different and
4) the 2 litre 914 engine has slightly bigger valves.

Like the Type IV kombie engine, these engines are a flat engine i.e. the fan runs off the end of the crank like a type 3. The type IV engines were the latested air cooled engine made by VW and arguably the best. They have a bullet proof bottom end, alluminium case and can be stroked safely to 2.3 litre plus. (thats before you go big bore barrels). Up to 3 litres is achieveable.

You can buy everything you need to convert the engine to an upright configuration (the AUD/USD looks good right now) or if your handy, you can modify a 1600 fan housing to suit. Once converted the engine can go into a beetle of early kombie.

A mate of mine has converted a type IV engine to go in his early beetle. Basically, a 2 litre engine with 103mm barrels, cam, 911 fan setup, webbers etc. It revs to 8 grand and would bring a smile to Jeremy Clarkson's face.

If you want good torque and reliable hp, these engines are the go.

cheers

all 914's were injected
I think because of the valves the spark plugs are at a different andgle/position

The 914 engine is fuel injected with Bosch L tronic system. The 1700 engine has carbs and aircleaners etc, but I don't want to separate.

Hmmm good thoughts are good. The injection system comes with the engine. If you already have an engine whats the point?

yeah, thats why i was wondering what was different. i need to put a cam in the 2 ltr to have it perform the way i want, so if the 914 is there already, ....hhmmmm. then i can leave the 2 ltr as a spare for my 74 ute.
hhmmmm. how much?

don't forget one of the most distinctive features of the 914, the 3 studs on the intake manifold instead of 4 like the type 4.

3 stud heads only came on the 2 litre 914.
1.7 and 1.8 litre 914's were essentially the same spec as 411 and 412 of that era.
Main advantage of a 914 engine is that it hasn't been pushing a kombi for the last 30 years!

NO, not all... Some of the 1700's were carbed, and some of the 1800's were carbed with factory 40 PDSIT's.
