Are you after people's opinions, or hard data?

Do you mean more common NOW, or over the duration of the model life (ie, since 1954 in Australia?) Do you mean in Australia only, or world-wide? VW has sold 21,000,000 Beetles, and recently passed 10,000,000 Transporters (over 5 generations). But the Beetle ended in 1976 in Australia, 1978 in Germany and 2003 in Mexico. The T2 Kombi lasted until 1979 in Australia and Germany, and is STILL made in Brazil. So by 'more common', do you mean bigger production totals, or greater longevity? Also, are you counting T3, T4 and T5 Transporters as Kombis? Are you counting Golf-based New Beetles, as 'Beetles'?

For the record, all Australian model data is at the Club Veedub website. Sales for each VW model, for each year, are listed (it took me a LONG time to find the data). You can check each year, add them up, and work out for yourself the totals for each model and see how popular they were/are, sales-wise.

http://www.clubvw.org.au/Australian%20VW%20history.htm

As for the number of existing Beetles or Kombis on the roads now - good luck. The RTA doesn't release information that detailed - their stats are only broken down by Make (ie. Volkswagen). Also the RTA is NSW-only so you'd also have to contact the relevant bureaus in each state. Also check the Australian Bureau of Statistics website - they have some registration data on the various makes on our roads - but not models.

Answer - 'That Depends.'

Some events get more Beetles than Kombis. Some get more Kombis than Beetles. There's no definitive answer.

Do the experiment. Come along to Boris' Picnic Day on Sunday 24th Oct (Dolls Point, Sydney) and count them - of course that's only one 'sample'...

Yeah true theres no definate answer though kombis seem to be more the rage now everyone wants a kombi cause its a kool surf van and people more classing them as restorers delight where as beetles are classed as a use for parts in a situation of an un-regoed rusty old car. if you know what i meen.

Beetles have been more Common for many years..

as the majority of Kombis - utes and vans were used as work vehicles.. and drove into the ground.. and left...
AND RUSTED AWAY...

Just a few years ago...
Beetles were probably 3 or 4 to one...

But Now...
they are not far behind the beetle...

I don't believe Kombis will ever be more common or popular than beetles...
Kombis cost heaps to restore... much more than beetles..

still a lot of original beetles... out there...
not so many original Kombis..
as they were commercial vehicles..
mainly bay window campervans... and later..

LEE

In My Humble Opinion.... of cause....

The Beetle is more common. You could buy one easily any week of the year. Kombi's take more time to buy.

Fads seem to go in circles.
It depends on what gathering you go to, most of the goldcoast/brissy shows over the last couple of years have started to be overrun by kombis and now splits

When i think back to valla about 15 years ago it was about 60-70% beetles and rest kombis
back then a type3......WTF is one of those???
especially fastbacks

As far as production numbers go the beetle is the biggest selling car just infront of the model T Ford. And beetles have been more popular but now are Joel said theres is starting to over burn with kombis ,even splits.

You've opened a can of worms there, Dylan.

'Biggest selling car' depends on how you define it, as car designs evolve and change over time. Nowadays most sources say 'Biggest selling car model', in which case the results are:

1. Toyota Corolla - 37,000,000+ (1966-present)
2. Ford F-Series - 32,000,000+ (1948-present)
3. Volkswagen Golf - 26,000,000+ (1974-present)
4. Volkswagen Beetle - 21,529,464 (1938-2003)
5. Ford Escort - 20,000,000+ (1968-2003)
5. Fiat 124 - 20,000,000+ (1966-present)
7. Ford Model T - 16,500,000 (1908-1927)
7. Honda Civic - 16,500,000 (1972-present)
9. VW Passat - 16,000,000 (1973-present)
9. Nissan Sentra - 16,000,000 (1966-present)

ALL of these cars have been redesigned over their lives to various degrees. The Corolla especially - it's on its 10th generation and has evolved from rear to front drive and in-line to transverse engine. The Model T and Beetle were more consistent, but even so a Superbug L is very different from a 1938 Beetle. The Golf has the same layout after 6 generations, and the Ford F-series also has the same layout (probably the same suspension too!) This difficulty is why the Guinness Book of records no longer lists the Beetle as the 'best selling car'.

In any case, the Golf has long surpassed it.

This thread seems to be drifting abit OT but just to expand abit on what you're saying Phil,
Yes there's a huge evolutionary step between a VW38 and a Superbeetle but bare in mind Superbeetles were only sold between 71 and 80 to selected markets, they dont account for a huge percentage of the overall beetle population, especially considering that 76-80 were only cabrios

There's a guy here in Ballina with a 2001 Mexican beetle and it's got the wheelbarrow front end and swing axle rear, maybe even 4 wheel drums, yes the engine has fuel injection but its still a base product 1600 so the car as a whole really is not much different at all to a VW38 body and mechanically
Brazil and Mexico pumped out huge numbers of bugs like that
Brazil was still even using the 60s 6 volt bodys

Doesnt change the fact though that it's still been outsold by a number of cars now
