Finding a cars history from the engine and chassis numbers?
Hey guys,
I have heard and read that there are places (web sites) where you can find your cars history and birth certificate, I have looked on google and for
the life of me I cant find one that seems even slightly helpful.
Could anyone point me towards a good source of information ?

We live in Australia. Our Volkswagens - those sold from late 1954 to 1976 - were CKD-assembled and later fully manufactured in Melbourne. Volkswagen
AG does not have the production details of Australian-made Volkswagens - these records were destroyed in 1968 when VWA Ltd went out of business, with
another clean-out in 1977 when the factory was sold to Nissan. They no longer exist.
VW AG does provide a certificate service, which is popular with American and European VW fans. Their VWs were made in Germany. IT DOESN'T WORK FOR
AUSTRALIAN VOLKSWAGENS. By all means pay the money and send them your VW's chassis number, but you will get back either details that make no sense
(they only have the chassis 'block' details, not what VW Australia did with them), or a note saying the 'Chassis Number Does not Exist' -
especially for Australian '65-'67 Beetles with 19y nnnnnn numbers.
But if you still want an official VW Birth Certificate, VW requires a payment of 35 Euro by credit card (VISA/Mastercard only), or cheque along with
your full name, VIN (chassis) number. Personal cheques can be made out to "Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen". You can mail credit card details or a
checque to:

The easiest way may be to pay by credit card online. Just go to the VW Museum Website:

After a couple of months you will get an A4 letter, on official VW Museum letterhead, that has:
Build date
Delivery date
Delivery Destination
Original colors and upholstery
Optional extras (M-codes)
For your '57, VW will have a record of the CKD kit's chassis number and when it was dispatched from Germany. Destination for early Aussie chassis
numbers is usually 'Fiji' for whatever reason. Colour Codes and Extras will be blank.

Cheers for the reply, so its pretty pointless to get a birth Cert from Germania. What about registration history here in Australia ? Any places I can
go to find that info?

Hi, well there's nothing wrong with sending off anyway, if you're happy to part with 35 Euro. Your car is pretty early so you might get some
interesting info - and it will be something to keep. It's more for the 1965-67 Aussies that it's a total waste of money.
Sorry to disappoint you again, but the RTA does not have any historical rego detail, older than about 1990. I'm told that all the old printed records
were destroyed years ago when it used to be the DMR. I'm not even sure if they give out any previous owner detail since 1990 - privacy acts and so
on. Go ahead and enquire and let us know the results.
Another place you could try is the National Archives in Canberra - they may have kept copies of the DMR's records.
