Whats the cost of getting a dyno run?

and does anyone know a good place to go in Sydney?

Not to far from the CBD, artarmon?

Cheers

I think you may be in for a shock, as I was.

I wanted to get my engine tuned before it went in the car and you are looking at $800 upwards.

Don't know about down in Sydney, but in Bris dyno time is usually around $120 per hour including the guy who operates it and does the tuning.

You can possibly get it a bit cheaper if you're prepared to do outside of normal hours and if you do all the work on your own car... like say $80-$100 per hour.

btw - since when is Artarmon near the CBD ???

It shouldn't cost a great deal just to Dyno 'Run' your car, it's when you get them to start tuning it too when it starts costing money. You should give them a call and ask them how much it would be to just run your car up on the dyno and see how much t makes.

And don't forget to post up your figures!!:lol:

Dyno tuning is something everybody with a performance engine should do.

Whether it be mild or wild. Why would you spend thousands of dollars on an engine only to get 70,80 or maybe 85% of it,s horsepower.

The person who does my dyno work charges me around $100.00 per hour. This is worth every cent. The last time my car was dynoed we found 18rwhp in the mid range.
Try finding that amount from buying parts.

I would recommend a VW specialist for your dyno work. One who comes to mind is CBB in Penrith.

I say its a must. you can kill your engine over the long or even short term

Detonation! can't always know if its happening. unless you ECU has a knock sensor attached to its inputs.

AF and ignition map are EXTREMELY important! to the well being of your engine.

What average person would go. Oh I heard crackling inside the cylinders at 4000 and 6200 rpm at 80% throttle at 600m above sea level at 26oC ambient.

I rang the Artarmon mob, they don't have a dyno! :spin:

I think I'll just take it to CBB, I'll need to get an unregistered permit, bugger a trailer hire again (worst trailer ever!)

I'm with Birchall here I thnk... if this is with your current 1300 donk Shaun then seriously, there's prolly better places those $$$ could be spent.

Don't get hung up on FVee guys telling you you have to dyno.... they've already got very nicely sorted engines to start with.

Like Col's explained, dyno'ing is a diagnosis tool really that can tell you where to make changes... the dyno didn't give him 18hp, it was the ignition system change that the dyno showed him was needed.

And yeah... I think you know a list of changes for that engine already...

I was really thinking of using this dyno run just as a baseline, for a before and after comparison. As in the new year I'll be putting twin port heads on and a bigger carb

break down of the engine... as it is now

Internals: Stock 1300 VW
Heads and Valvetrain: Stock VW
Oil: Stock VW with addition of Pobjoy anti surge sump.
Induction: Stock Solex 30 pict
Ignition: 009, compufire module, W8AC plugs, stock leads and coils.
Exhaust: 1 3/8 Extractor, (VVDS Mild steel one)

Package is good for about 5550rpm and will pull hard to about 110 or 115 in 3rd gear.

Proposed immediate changes include (new year and before the Nationals hopefully)

Cb Performance PICT manifold
twin port heads, with port and polish
tweaked 34 pict carb larger venturi and jetted for more power instead of economy
hot-dog type muffler (mainly ground clearence reasons)

If funds and time allow, I would love to have the engine rebuilt with a hotter cam and lightened flywheel and counterweighted crank with all the parts balanced etc.
but the above will do me if not.

If the heads can be really opened up i'd love to put some ratio rockers with an FK can (FK45 or FK 44) on and add some 40 or 44 IDF's to get some real revs and flow happening as well as a larger 1 1/2 inch exhaust

I know I should just bore it out to get more power, but I'm making the car for tarmac rallies in the limited modifications class so capacity isnt really cost effective to increase. If there wasn't a budget for it I would bore out to 80mm and add some custom JE pistons!!

Hope that helps

Waste of time and money, just drive it up and down the road!!! With faster higher hp cars its hard to find anywhere on the road to give them a good full load run for tuning, and the engine is far closer to the tuning edge.

mmmm............I am over dyno's

I have taken mine back to the same one but the last time I had a ridiculously differnt reading
After a bit of asking round I found that about 4 different cars at the same time had scratched their heads as they had done serious improvement only to get lower readings

At $85 for a single power run - I will just save the $$$ and put it in the motor

That said - an A/F reading is good value

A couple of dyno runs and you can have your own full time meter set up in your car

Its a STOCK engine a dyno will probally give you a HP reading of 25 to 30 at the rear wheels

Spend you money on something worth while

A Dyno wont get you more HP

Wait till you increase the engine capacity so over 2L and have dual carbies or Turbo or injection
