Plastic Wind deflectors
Hi,
Have a friend overseas that is looking to buy a set of these. Apparently he bought these ones in Sydney but can't remember where from? Anyone know
where you might get them from?

Never ever seen them that big Steve...
originally they were used because You had to put Your arm out to signal You were stopping or turning...
I doubt if You could get Your arm out of those...
they would stop any air getting into Your 1/4 windows in the doors...
cannot remember seeing these on any Aussie cars...

Years ago, before cars had blinkers, you had to give hand signals out the window to indicate you were turning or stopping.
From memory, you had your arm straight out with your fingers straight and together (like in a 'salute') to turn right, and your arm out and
elbow bent at 90 degrees so your forearm was vertical (still with your 'salute') to turn left or stop.
It was fiddly (especially for emergency stops), and so much for hands on the wheel and keeping your body inside the car. lol Wet weather, or
even winter, were a bit of a bugger.
I think it went out in the late seventies - all cars had blinkers by then.

I understand that completely Jeff and am aware of how things used to work.
I just have no idea what it's relevance to the wind deflectors that this thread is about, or why Lee brought it up.

They were commonly known as weathershields, and were very popular when hand signals were mandatory - in the'50s and '60s.
Back then you could be 'booked' for failing to signal your intention to stop, or turn - even if your vehicle was fitted with stop lights, (or
semaphores for that matter)!
There were some silly laws about, even then.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

I hate those space bubbles.
noisy, windy, gets in the way and makes for an excellent blind spot.

Hi Smiley,
most very early Holdens had windshields on the drivers door window as You had to stick Your arm out when You were stopping or turning....
so, if it was raining, the rain wouldn't come in with the window down....
back then, these perspex things were made in two pieces..
vertical and horizontal at the top...
then progressing much later into these curved ones....
they probably cause Your car to use more petrol as there is some wind drag....
maybe not so much on these later ones....
Now on New cars You can still buy ones that stick to the door
or as on late model Magnas... stick to the body as the doors had no window frames..
I've always driven cars with blinkers so cannot remember ever having to poke My hand out the window to stop....
in an emergency.... and breaking two fingers as the window was UP..... lol

I don't think anyone answered his question!
I saw a company a couple of years back that was in Aus, it was selling sunvisors, venetians and the weathershields for VW's but I tried finding it
and couldn't.
But as has been brought up by many people on here google is your friend...

I had one on my original 76. But it sat behind the front quater window, so didn't interfere with it.
It was a factory or dealer option back then from the House of David which was in North Ryde, where there is now a Macca's and KFC, although I htink
the Macca's has just closed recently.
As to where to get one now, sorry no ideas.

Auto cables only do the really angular/square looking weathershields for beetles.
I bought a pair off them a couple of years ago after specifically asking what shape they were (i wanted the round/bubble shape). They turned up in the
angular shape so I sent them back & hassled them until they refunded my money.
I currently have an old buble shaped one on the drivers side, & am constantly looking for a match for the passenger side. Mine is shorter than the
one shown at the top, it only goes forward to the vent window.
I'll try & get a picture for you.

they are the original type that was sold in the 50s and 60s...
Blue or Green at the top...
Blue seemed to be the most common...
