Why would you want a second hand one, they are cheap as to buy new.

heu no was meaning the timing belt the ting that makes you engine go...symptoms were going on for few weeks and from what I could read it looks like it...loss of power, backfring sputter...car will stop then again and again issues with gears that the engine will go mad then ...it died !!!

but I did also hear funny noise in the fanbelt can a fanbelt or something wrong cause that to a fasty...because when i looked on the internet everything was saying timing belt...thanks

for the mounting I will buy as soon as my mechanic gives me a diagnostic such as I can repair or I need a new engine...I am going to strip down the car and do every spot of rust etc and then the inside and then check and check everything single thing before I drive it again...but I love my car!!!

looooool so what the hell do they have!!! I have checked the fan belt :-) and it is not borken got the hubby to double check for me so that the hell can it be...it did play weird thing on me loss of power strange noises ....will backfire sputter then stops also sometimes the engine will go crazy gear stuff...

Mind you I think she played a bit like herbie because if the car did not stop...Thanks god it did I would have been driving a car with borken wheels bearing :-)

any idea?

What I am about to do is to check with the engine to see if I have not done it...and if it is all good awith a bit of work I will strip down the car and spend every little penny I have to restore it to a very Awsome fasty :-) Thanks all for your help !!!! Very precious!!!!

fan belt? type 3 only have a generator belts :smirk:

presuming you have carbys, sounds like a fuel issue. possibly problem in one or both carbs.
Float valve might be getting stuck or dirt blocking the jets. Fuel filter, tank and/or line can get blocked up with crap or rust.

one way to check is after the car is all warmed up and the next time it dies, lift the air cleaner ducts off the carbs and pump the throttle on them to see if fuel is squirted down the throat.
Usually u would hear a sizzle and cloud of fuel fog form in them when u pump the throttle. If one or both don't do this then you have a fuel problem somewhere.

heu...thanks if I can remember we have a bettle engine in the type 3 from what I was told, mind you I did think about the fuel as it will always do it after I went to the pump but when i took it to the mechanic he said fuel fliter was clear...we live on dirt road but it does not explain the awful noise i did hear before it break down like grrrrrrrrrddddddddddddddrgh in the engine!!

thanks vlad for the tip now on my way to do research on that generator belt!!

Yes but the generator belt has nothing to with any of this. That sound could be knocking as the engine leans out from fuel starvation.

Dear Vlad....

Can bad Cv thing can be the cause of the engine stoping or not working well...As when the two truck came bac he said I was lucky to be alive since my wheels bearing were gone...the steering wheel was shaking too ...for 2 weeks

Worn U-joints on RWD driveshafts can cause vibrations at any speed as can an incorrectly installed U-joint. A worn U-joint (or inner CV joint in FWD applications) will usually "clunk" when the transmission is put into gear or when changing speed abruptly. A bad U-joint may also emit a cyclic chirp when starting out from a dead stop.

It also did happen my dad was in the car the side of the bad wheel and he is bloody heavy!!!

that cyclic chirp most likely be a wheel bearing as I have had it happen to me. Vws have CV's just like fwd , but obviously at the rear. they are more likely to make a clicking, clunk or crushing sound.

CV joint wont stop and engine but will stop you from driving if it breaks, like being in neutral all the time.

I honestly still think you have a fuel system issue or ignition problem but most likely a fuel problem. I would gladly take a look for ya but unfortunately I live in Victoria :sniffle:

ok but it will not have made those backfires sounds and sputter and loss of power before breaking down?

The car did have battery and I could start the car but the engine will not start...

yes it would. that is exactly what fuel starvation does. it will make the car die sputter and backfire like crazy.

And of course no starting easy after ;)

Dear Vlad,

Thanks a lot remind me next time you want a holiday to offer you r our B&B!!! seriously it drives me insane...ok the wheel bearing was gone according to the guy who took the car back to us. I was not concerned with the backfiring and sputter as i took it to the guy who did revamp our engine and he said everything was fine...I must say it did happen very often after i did petrol at bp maybe bad fuel?

tonight i will try to see if the car does start...if the engine starts it is all good...it maybe only a combination of problems, the loud awful noise like something was broken and not working fine...My concern is that at one stage I had very loud noise in the engine / gears...it was reving up like mad...

Is your clutch adjusted properly difficulty selecting gears could be 1 problem 2does the throttle pedal return when depressed maybe the cable could do with some lube also carby linkages dirty clogged in dust ?:spin:
a fastback i bought for parts some time ago drove how you have described fairly basic problems but together lethal
The noise however nothing got caught in the fan housing anywhere?:ninja:

Dear L469

Thanmks for your help... the engine is really clean..was sort off rebuilt recond carbies etc change rods etc 2 months ago.. my second ggear has ALWAYS been an issue...wheels bearings are gone :-( one thing!!

yetsrday I checked the fule pump and it does work ...the car will start but it is impossible to kick in the engine...ingintion? we have an electric ingition box $500 maybe it is faulty but there is also one thing I remember with the fasty...they do not like big puddle of water...there is something underneat easy to fix that will stop them from starting...can't remember what now...my hubby thinks the noise was something to do with wheels bearing...but it does not solve the sputtering backfire etcI will have another look at the fan housing!

Father Christmas is buying me a mechanic kit so I can start to learn...lol yesterday I had to tell my hubby what things were in that engine...I am seriously doubting his mechanics skills!!!
