Oils aint Oils
I've always just used GTX 20W50,
recently had a service and Nulon 20W50 was put in.
Its all got me thinking about oils; as I had to top up my Tiguan by 250ml before it's first service.
anyway, been looking into the Castol Edge range (as recommended/manufactured by VW as well) and thought about putting in some 10W60 or 5W30 Castrol
Edge.
Has anyone used these weights of oil before?
What oil weight do most of you use? (i'm guessing 20W50)
As I see it, it will warm up quicker and stand hotter temps better than a 50 weight....
Further to this VW recommends in the orignal manuals to use a straight SAE 30 (like ACE30), and for colder use recommends a SAE 10, so could one
safely assume if a 10W30 or 5W30 was used that it would be more suitable than a 20W50 for all climates?

I have always used CASTROL GTX 2 in My beetle...
for ordinary road use.... not on a private race track... lol
for racing the Castrol edge would be the pick...
although many people on here will pick a different oil... lol
IS the beetle engine standard????
If it is I would still go with GTX2...
If it has extra cooling then I'd go with a lower number like
5w/40 maybe... ????
My brain still thinks that I should use 20W/60 oil as its thicker
and shouldn't go as watery [thinner] when really hot..???
but I'm still using Castrol GTX 2.. 20w /50 oil...
I use Castrol Magnatec in My liquid cooled cars...

The thing you have to be carefull of going too thick with the oil is the higher pressure causes the releife valve to stay open and bypass the oil
cooler which leads to high oil temps, although its more of an issue in duel reliefe blocks.
I only ever ran old shitter engines on 20/50, fresh ones ran fine for me all year round on 10/30 or 10/40

Hi Guys
Castrol oils in Australia still have the zinc in their oils...
oils in the USA have had most ?? of the Zinc taken out...
I think it upsets the catalytic converters...
so, at the moment zinc is still in oils in Australia...
ACE has a bit more zinc than Castrol GTX2...
I've used Castrol Magnatec in My liquid cooled cars since it came out...
I was going to use it in My beetle but Castrol didn't recommend it..
OK Mat on the relief valves...
and My HO engine only has one..
Now I'm thinking that using thick oil is Only making the relief valve work harder... so that 10w/40 would be better...
Many beetle owners use a higher Viscosity as they know how watery the oil gets when its VERY HOT....
so, think, as I do.... the thicker the better..
although I have never gone to 20w/60.... oil
cheers
LEE

Yes Mat
that should have been advertised more....
I always thought it was 30 grade mono for ACE 30....
which I thought was too thin
