Doc. I think the 56 is different to the one's youve got bud.
Correct me if I'm wrong anyone, but the 56 Popes nose has a sorta pointy ridge in the centre that runs up to meet the decklid (I was recently told this),yours is later and doesnt have the ridge in it.
Note the 'dent' at the top of nose. Cant really see the ridge in it though

THE POPE'S NOSE LICENCE PLATE LAMP WAS ONLY EARLY BEETLES WITHOUT STOP LIGHTS IN THE TAIL LIGHTS..

THE STOP LIGHT WAS IN THE POPE'S NOSE ..
SO IT GLOWED RED WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED...

THAT IS WHY IT WAS CALLED A POPE'S NOSE...
BECAUSE IT GLOWED RED....

IT WAS USED UNTIL OCTOBER 1952 ...

WHEN THE TAIL LIGHTS HAD STOP LIGHTS COMBINED...

I believe these are the correct lights for a 1956 beetle...

the lense under this was a flat piece of plastic... from memory..

and the ridge would fit the "W" engine cover... [at a guess]
