Failed Rego Today
Hey,
I failed my rego check today; there was a few things that were yeah ok fair enough; (mind you they have been like that since I've owned it).
Things like the steering with a bit of play and a cracked axle boot.
But the things that got me were they wanted me to replace my upholstery as it wasn't up to par quote un quote.
The said I can't not run bumpers but they couldn't provide a rule (like they did everything else...) and they said I can't not have a passenger
seat?
Has anybody encountered these things?
Personally I think it was a poor check over by them as they didn't take it for a drive or even have a look at the motor...

if the seat cover was split, thats correct.
as for the passenger seat, how many seater is it registered as having?
its a bit strange that they didnt take it for a drive as they are supposed to do a brake check on it.
mind you ive never had a problem with con.

Sounds fair enough to me.
Why would they drive it if it had already presented as un roadworthy?
In theory the vehicle must be complete as constructed ie bumpers all upholstery, seats, seat belts etc.
Personally i would never drive a car with dodgy steering?

I think i'm just PO'd as this is the first ever rego check it has failed; I've owned the car for 8 years.
To me it just seems that if they are going to do a rego check it's should be complete; like when your inspecting anything you don't stop on the
first item and say "ah won't do the rest now seeing as one thing is wrong" there was no drive, no test of lights, no inspection of the engine it
just seems like unprofessional conduct.
I like the in theory comment too, but if there is nothing written they have nothing to base an objection on...
just more time and money now!

Taking a positive view on it, at least you have a list of what needs to be fixed !!!
Put the passenger seat back in (yes, it needs to be there... back seat too unless you've been mod-plated to be seating capacity of 2)... throw on
some seat covers... bumpers... adjust the steering box... replace an axle boot... an easy Sunday afternoon of work and you're done.

anyway if anyone has an Old VW that they want checked for rego steer clear of VW Village in Kensington as they will want it factory fresh before they
pass you.
I would of taken it to Boris but Campsie is to far to drive unregistered for me.

I think Sides is very much correct here. Although you may want to use it as a race car, you can't legally remove seats without having a mod plate
changing the seating capacity. Removing the bumpers affects the car's crashworthiness so is also banned. Put them back on for the roadworthy and then
take them back off when you get to the track if that's what you want to do.

I find that many mechanics have their little pet dislikes...
I have never had a car Not Pass a rego test...
as I always keep them roadworthy ..
BUT a local Mechanic who lived not far from Me and even worked with Me at one time...
He ALWAYS... wrote down that a tail light or stop light didn't work...
which always drove Me crazy ... 
Nerf bars are dangerous protrusions for pedestrians and are illegal... but no bumper would be safer for pedestrians..
many mechanics are also looking for work from the rego test
so, a split CV joint boot and too much play in the steering
would be easy jobs for Him to fix...
maybe they were his pet hates too... with beetles...
and checked them out first...

now lets look at it from cons point of view, all it takes for him to loose it is 1 dodgy inspection.
as i previously said most of them are reasonable when doing them. but if you really want to whinge ring the rta.

It seems to me, Shaun, that you are at the cross-roads with your Beetle - is it a road car or a race car? To have both, there will always be
compromises.
Even if you decide to go for the 'race car' option, there will be people who will find things wrong with your car - they're called scrutineers.
They also have a job to do, and I would hope that they would NOT let you onto the 'track', knowing that an axle boot was split.........I could be
behind you, slithering in your transmission oil.
Rules are rules, mate, and (like it or not) we all have to learn to live with them.

I think you've hit the nail on the head Greg, it really is a cross road for the car at the moment.
I'll have to get an engineers certificate for the roll-cage on the road too I realised this morning;
Had a look at the tear in the axle boot, it's on the "newer" type not the original; it also only leaks when the car is jacked up i.e extreme
positive camber.
either way I have a list of things to work too and will see how I go getting it done before new years.

When you put the new axle boot on - before you go on the track in front of me - make sure the join is in the correct place. Best spot is between 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock,
and not at the top (12 o'clock) or 3 o'clock. And don't tell me that those times are not convenient!
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!
