Depends on the year-model VW. For early ones it's called the Manufacturer's Plate. For VWs made before 1969 it's not required for registration as
there are no ADR requirements (and no ADR details).
Pre-1968 Australian manufactured ones only had 'Volkswagen Australasia Ltd', the model (Type 11), the chassis number, the vehicle weight in pounds
and the max front/rear axle loadings in pounds. This is not required for registration renewal, but for an old car undergoing re-registration they may
look for it.
When ADRs first came in force in January 1969, the plate was changed to a 'compliance plate', which is more detailed and adds manufacture date and
all the relevant ADRs the car is required to meet. All 1969-and-later Australian registered cars are required to have one. For NSW annual rego renewal
no one seems to look at it, but for a new rego the inspector will certainly look for it and fail you if it's missing.
