many vw owners will have heaps of spare pumps

someone in Sydney may be able to help...

or new ones aren't too expensive when the shops open next week..

Lee

you can take the top off the carby
fill with petrol...
screw top back on...
start engine....
engine will go until the fuel empties out...

there is also a cone shaped fuel filter in the bottom of your fuel tank...
I pulled mine out and thru it away when i restored My beetle..

so, it may be blocking Your fuel from coming out...

did you also have the fuel cap off... in case the breather is blocked...

there usually is a cone shaped fuel filter in Your pump too...

but it sounds like it may be the tank filter or breather...

another thing Chris....

If You have an early beetle with a fuel tap...
lever on the floor at the front....

at 45 degrees... roughly 2 o oclock....
it turns the fuel OFF....

straight up is normal...
and 3 o clock is on reserve...

Is there fuel in the line coming up to the pump? If you've run the tank dry and then refilled it, then you will probably get an air lock in the fuel line. The fuel pump will not pull enough vacuum on the air in the line to get fuel to start pumping through. This happened to me recently. The way I fixed it was to take the fuel line off the pump and blow into it twice, sharply. Then I took my mouth away and waited a few seconds. Blowing down into the line causes a pressure wave in the tank which breaks the air lock (or something like that) and the fuel came rushing down. I reattached the line to the pump and it then worked perfectly.
