The Porcshe engineers have probably been browsing our forums,
in the non-vw engine conversions pages.

I think I would actually prefer the japanese version,
but I guess we should wait and see what they come up with.
I also heard a rumour that Formula 1 are going to use type 4 engines since they have so much torque.

Yes, I did think they had forgotten about that. Porsche finds itself in a spot of bother with the Boxster and Cayman because they can't make them too good, lest they take the shine off the 911. As good as they can make the rear engined 911, you'd have to think a mid-engined Boxster with an equivalent engine would be superior.

Likewise you would think that any four cylinder turbo they would offer would be deliberately calibrated to be just a little bit slower than the 6 cylinder versions.

Of course if they do knobble it like that, then the aftermarket could step in and make some monster fours.

We'll just have to wait and see :borg:

This statement is absolutely 100% true, and pretty much defines everything which Porsche do. I do like Porsche, and the engineering which they put into their cars, but none of them except the top 911s and other top-of-the-line models is actually tuned to be as good as it can be. They deliberately detune all of the lesser models to provide performance which varies through the model range with an almost perfectly linear relationship to price. I can't even begin to say how much I hate this. The Boxster and especially the Cayman should by all rights be offered with the full-powered 911 Turbo and GT3 engines, but then they would be superior to the 911s and their sales people would go completely insane.

Also, on a slightly less conspiratorial note, who thought that a slower version of the Boxster was necessary? The base model is slow enough as it is for a Porsche sports car. 1410kg and only 188kW from the base Boxster, if the four-cylinder loses much power it will be in danger of being slower than the MX-5, which only weighs 1135kg and has 118kW, or 125kW in European trim. Being slower than the MX-5 would be a serious embarrassment, considering the difference in price and prestige.
