The modern VW fans could also ask, "why are there air-cooled articles? They haven't been on sale here for 35 years."

There's more to the Volkswagen scene than just air-coolers and it's proper that ALL Volkswagen models are included.

Finally got a one year subscription. I was tired of buying them at the newsagency.

Hi Craig, just picked it up today, another great issue.

I was interested to read the 'Turbo' vault article on page 6. It doesn't say who wrote the article, but it says "Volkswagen used the Golf Mk1 platform to release its first turbocharged diesel car in 1982."

Not quite right. The Audi 100TD was the first 'VW Group' turbo diesel, with a 2.0-litre turbo five that debuted in July 1981. The turbo version of the VW 1588cc diesel ('CY' prefix) appeared in August 1981, just a month later, and debuted simultaneously in the Mk1 Golf, Jetta and the Passat - which was longitudinal, not transverse. This engine appeared in US-spec models in March 1983, and for UK market not until 1985 (Mk2 Golf by then). We didn't see turbo diesel Golf engines in Australia until the Mk3 in 1996 !

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_discontinued_Volkswagen_Group_diesel_eng...

And it wasn't just the Americans who sold turbo kits for Golfs/Rabbits. This is a price sheet from Rymec Turbochargers that I picked up from the Sydney Motor Show in 1979 - although it is for petrol Golfs, not diesels. I recall that Wheels magazine did a road test of a Rymec turbo Golf in 1979 or so, but I don't have the issue.
