356 engine curious
just saw a pic of a 356 engine in an oval and had a hmmmm thought.
What would an average rebuildable 356 cost. Would they be any more expensive to rebuild than a VW 36er?

perhaps look for a porsche 912 engine.
They have 356 derived running gear, so 'technically' could call it a 356 engine
Just like how the kombi's have porsche 2ltr engines

New engine in process: 94mm p&bs, 74mm C/w chomol Crank, 35.5x39 SP heads, turbo. Wierd combo, hopeful torque monsta!

yeah I saw that one too but like the 914/kombi same isnt same. That looks heaps wider than could fit in an oval/356 engine bay. And because its 10
years older than the oval it wouldnt quite cut it as a "period accessory"

Yes, Chris, they are more expensive to rebuild than a 36er but not rediculously more. They are certainly more engine and sooo similar in feel, sound,
looks, vintage and parts availability but 1600 and 75-90hp stock. Mind you 90hp 356 engine is a joy to drive in a 356, I reckon one would be beautiful
in a bug. I've rebuilt a few and know where there are some engines for sale, so if you need any input feel free to give us a yell.

Just stick a battery in, she'll be good to go
I Remember seeing a bug many years back with a Carrera 4 engine in it, those engines fetch about $100k these days

There were a few - not many - Beetles with 356 engines getting about in the late '50s, early '60s. The options then were not like to-day, so it was
the 356, a Judson blower, Denzel conversion, or maybe 2 carbies, if you wanted more go.
As Matt says, they are a beautiful engine, and would be great in an early Beetle. The early 356 engine is OK, but could be improved (if doing a
re-build) by fitting later bits. 912 crank, rods, etc. can be fitted to make a very reliable, strong engine. Well worth considering.
I'd rather wear a Beetle out by racing it than by polishing it!

Not sure how long I've had my oval for. Must be getting close to 20 years. It was going to be a callooker, then a faithful restore, and somehow last
night 356 power got into my head. Who knows where I will be when I finally have the cash to do anything. But yeah I'm pretty excited about porsche
power today.
I have 3 or 4 complete 36ers I can swap

you mean carrera 2 GS. carrera 4 is the later 911s with AWD.
anyway the quad cam 356 engines are a beast. Perhaps you might want to talk to Jake Raby at Air cooler technology. He is a Porsche and vw nut,
specialty being type 4 engine, best in the world at them.
Perhaps even a basic 2056cc with 135hp and good for 250,000kms +
About 10k that one costs.

check it out anyway. He has engine packages for 356, 912 and 914s too, not just vw's
