Does this alternator have internal regulator or not


Hi guys,

Can some please tell me or confirm, does this alternator in the photo have a built in internal regulator.

My car use to have a generator and since buying this motor and now about to start wiring, I wasn't sure if I needed to add a regulator into the system now or not.

Looks like mine should have an internal regulator.

To check run the motor and put the positive lead of a multimeter in the charge terminal of the alternator. Select the AC scale and see if it reads voltage. Should display 12-14.4V DC only. (A small amount of AC volts can be present depending on the diode pack quality) If you have a upmarket multimeter like a Fluke it will read AC on the diplay when set to DC mode as well.

Looks like a single terminal internally regulated to me, the external reg alt. has the B+ and 3 wires to the regulator.

Definately internally regulated.

single spade connector in the black housing is your charge light and obviously big B+ post is battery output.

Kev, one other thing, it would pay to get a rubber boot for the B+ post

The one thing I don't like about aftermarket alternators is the B+ post is up high very exposed, OG alternators both ext and int reg have them recessed down lower on the body.

It's live all the time so with 8ga wire direct to the battery it makes for a bang if your working on the carbs or something and bump it.
I've seen quite a few bugs and upright kombis around with burn marks on them where someone has bumped it with a tool while working.
