2 CKD ovals in the same family.......in england!

hello all

i havn't been on this forum in a very long time but since my father bought an oval i thought id post an update.

when i lived in Sydney in 1998 i bought an oval from a chap in Blacktown that he had just decided to never restore and shipped it back to england where i have restored it. its chassis number dates it to december 1955 and its body number is something like MKA1122

in June my father reached 60 years old and decided to 'in his words' fuck modern cars, im going to drive round in a bug! so we set off to find him a runnabout. anyway i got accosted while in the oval at the traffic lights by a fella on a bike who said he had one for sale and was i interested, it was an Aussie imported oval. we had a look and bought it and lo and behold its another CKD oval, its chassis number dates it to late August 1955 but its body number is MKA9955 ish so the body must have been made only about 2000 or so before mine!

as the factory was really pumping them out at that time we reckon that both cars were shipped to Aus at the same time and built CKD at about the same time and looking at the old paint they were even the same colour.

what do you think the chances are that these two ovals were sat in the dealership next to each other only to end up being owned by father and son the other side of the world:o

ps
my oval was a bit of a wreck, its now fully restored and MSA log booked and running a pauter cranked motor in the VWDRC.

my dads has got my original interior in his and is running some rocket racing wheels.

both are loved and looked after and mine will be shipped back to aus when me and the mrs (from the northern beaches) move over :)

ill post pics later :)

cool...

Good story...

So let me see if I have this correct.

You bought a crappy beetle here in Australia :o

The took it to england and rebuilt it.

Now you are going to bring it back when you come over ...

Well what will those silly people that hate things going to england have to say about that ??

Would love to see some pictures..

this is the setup for drag racing in the VWDRC, FIA seats, harnesses, cage, monster tach, cutoff switch, extinguisher etc.

i looked at the body numbers and mine is MKA1121 and my dads is MKA9262 so they were pretty close together on the production line ;)

Hi Jimbi
Good to see another two Ovals brought back to their former glory, Top Stuff!
And it's great to see that your Oval will be comming to sunny OZ, and the Northern beach's, can't get a much better place than that!
Just make sure you garage her when you move over, the salt air near the coast is a dead set killer for steel body cars, Id pump it full of Tectyl and fish oil or some other similar rust preventitive substance, you have done a great job, lets keeep it alive!

Ovals on the Northern Beaches

Look me up when you're on the Northern Beaches. I'll join you for a cruise and maybe even some traffic light racing. There's only one other oval I know of on the Northern Beaches.

Gears

Hey Dave,

My engine is mated tightly to your gearbox.

Thanks again by the way. It's working absolutely faultlessly. I love third and fourth gear. If only first and second would get me through an intersection.

Good to hear from you again jimby. Still got the oval in retro rally mode I see, nice. Good to see you are bringing it back home.

CT, disapointing that you are not making it up, I was looking forward to seeing your oval in the metal at Valla.
