hey
my bros beetle has just died and lost all signs of a kick
what happens is the starter motor sounds like its engaging but wont turn over the motor
we have changed the starter motor and recharged the battery (tried battery out of falcon aswell) checked all the fuses etc!
whats goin on?

Is the motor seized? To find out, try cranking it by hand (either turn the ignition off or better still take the spark plugs out so it doesn't start while you're hand-cranking).

it would still start to crank if it was siezed though!!! it can be roll started and driven so its not seized

yeh sounds like the earth strap from the gearbox to gearbox mount, mine came off and done the same thing.

Otherwise, check the starter - try one that is known to work.

hey the starter we put in does work! there is 2 earth straps on from the battery and one from the motor should they both be connected to the starter?????

One should go from the battery to the body, the other should go from the body to the starter.

BTW, there is a difference between a starter that works with no load, and a starter that works with a load. ie. just because it works when out of the car, doesn't mean that it's going to start your car. Chances are though that it's an earth strap (I hope). :)

we used the one to start motor out of the car- so yes it does start motors!:D i hope its something as easy as that aswell!

climb under and short a spanner across the power and solenoid terminals of the starter. There will be some sparks, it the starter don't turn then, well it's dead.

ok update
we hot wired it and it cranked then fiddled with stuff and know it starts to turn over from the key BUT when u turn the key off there is run on of the starter motor so know am thinking thats its the ignition switch!?
