After that williamtown (near stockton) and I too will be hitting the EJ25 bandwagon, Whats your expected rebuild time?

Sweet work guys, is that Crazy Col I see in one of those pictures ?

I am a little confussed though .... correct me if I am wrong but you are worried about weight so you have taken the doors off and removed the windows, removed the roof and then added more weight through barwork than you ever removed.

If you are after a VW with no roof or windows then wouldn't building a buggy have been a better option ?

IMO even a buggy needs the barwork. Even in the 1950's the beetle pan's frame head was getting cracked and broken when used on 'normal' roads with a stock car. Plus as Chris said, lower c of g and STRONG, and who cares what body is around it, it's a VW underneath and it'll go better than most 4wd's with a fun factor of around a million :).

A little progress at both ends of this baja

Finished front bumper sorry for the blurry pic

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/mattberry-photo/Phils%20Baja/23032011365.jpg

Began on rear cage and exhaust.
For the exhaust, we started with the Subi stubs, cut and shortened them, then with some pipe and an exhaust donut fabbed the pipes.
They say a good exhaust doesn't help a cracker on an EJ25, but we went with a nice flowing simple design that is light an has plenty of ground clearance. The stock Subi sump has to go

Rear bar in progress
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/mattberry-photo/Phils%20Baja/26032011391.jpg

Ended up with a nice departure angle, and don't tell Phill, but I think a VW powerplant will still fit :)
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/mattberry-photo/Phils%20Baja/26032011392.jpg

Cage attaches to rear trans mount. Tempory M18 bolts fitted atm.
http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/mattberry-photo/Phils%20Baja/26032011393.jpg

http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/mattberry-photo/Phils%20Baja/26032011394.jpg

The sump will definately be getting shortened. I thought the cast alloy one looked good, but it is only 50mm shorter and we need around 70mm minimum. Also plan to relocate oil filter or just get Phill to do his own servicing as the cage will need to be removed to change the oil filter if we don't relocate it. Actually.....I forgot, being a Subi engine, arn't they cheaper to replace than service.....might leave the filter where it is..:lol:

:tu: Awesome looking machine Phil is it up and running yet?
The cage looks the business and I love the idea of the barwork under the body mounts
that was were I ran the stainless radiator tubing in the last one I built
With yours already being registered with so many mods do you get any curry from the law? particularly being on the coast
I have QT paperwork for mine and I was looking at doing the full front cut with one piece front end
Is your tank still up front

Not much progress for update pics lately.

The trans mount is a 10* kit from Parts Unlimited. I usually make my own, but with the dollar so good, the whole kit is great value and a nice product.

The front tyres are only 14" but are a nice agressive tread. An x rally tyre so the tread is nice and agressive. They are 4 sale with the 5 spoke wheels, PM Phillsmanx if your interested.

Yeah thanks for that Matt,
I am selling a bit of gear of my own, so should have a bit of spare cash very shortly.
Are they a wheel tyre combo or just wheels?
Are they in good nik with no buckles or warping?
And of course The $$$ value
Also Matt, I've been told you might be the man to talk to about getting hold of
a one piece fibreglass front end for the new Baja project
let me know
