Planning an engine rebuild in the future


Well this year will see rosie with a new interior so I am planning what else I'd like to have done.

I will eventually respray the car but not for a few years. I would like to increase the power of the 1600 TP and have my engine rebuilt rather than replace it. It runs well and hasnt had any issues however I'd like a little more power on take off. Maybe increase HP from around 45hp to 80hp. I am not looking for a race car just something to drive on weekends with a little more grunt.

From what i have read the fist things i should do are

1. Replace the existing cam with a larger one
2. Twin IDF carbys 36?
3. Replace the standard exhaust
4. Powder coat the tinware

Is there any other modification i should consider, i am thinking of a budget of around 4 to 5K

Any advice would be much appreciated

1. increase the capacity

2. use a standard cam and standard carb
or
use dual webers , increase the comp ratio , replace cam , improve cooling.

A good 1770cc costs around 5K

I agree with Johnny's advice

a 1776/1916 with mild cam, carb and exhaust gives about 25% increase in power and is nice and torquey.
I had a 1916 like this for about 5 years and was a lovely daily

A stock 1600 with exhaust and dual carbs would be very similar but duals are more work than a single

After that it is a matter of how far you want to go

I am a little confused so to get more capacity it's basically replacing the existing engine? Or increasing my engines capacity

increase capicity just bore the case and heads to fit bigger cylinders and pistons......best power increase if engine is coming apart anyhow.

benefits of new rings comes with it

doesn't cost much for the machining, send it up to pobjoy or the dudes in sydney would get it done for around $200

thing is Rod could probably set you up with a complete engine for your budget

Yes thats my other option to get one from Rod as I know he has lots laying around lol. I will be taking the car down to him later this year for a new interior.

hey Paul, a 1776 with higher comp, bigger heads and twin 40-44idfs with a custom tune, 110 engle cam, ratio rockers and a 1 1/2 inch extractors will give u the performance gain u want :P could get that done for ur 5k budget.... :dork: a 1916 would be a little more power but with a 1776 it would be a little more safer cooling wise if u dont wanna go an external cooler.... i had 86.5hp at the wheels on my 1776 with 48 idfs and a 1 5/8 exhaust.... but to be honest the carbs and exhaust were too big for it... the 1776 would give u real nice torque without going too silly.... cheers adam

u could use ur existing case and possibly the crank depending on its condition.... ( if it needs it, it can be re-ground, but for i wouldnt put anything in over a 1st grind if u want to be able to have some fun and have it be reliable) but heads, cam, pushrods, rockers, head studs and bearings would be new, no point or worth the risk using an old bottom end when ur going to pull it apart..... u wouldnt know untill u pull it down but after u check all the parts and clearances u would know how much of it u can use.... if its the original case and it hasnt been tunnel bored u would be fine using the case and crank, either that or u could use a german counterwieghted crank.... nice addition esp if u get the rolling assembly balanced.... standard rods would be fine too... but like i said new bearings would be advisable if ur going that far...

Thanks Adam we will talk about it more in the future i'm sure but as you said a 1776 seems to be the way to go for what i want, keep an eye our for carbys etc lol

ok so getting closer to my engine build here is what i have purchased so far

New As41 case bored for 1776
mohle 90 mm pistons
New heads port and polished
engle 110 cam
8 dowel counterwieghted crank
SCAT oil reservoir
Twin Delorto 40's

Still to purchase

Distributor - probably a magnaspark digital
Alternator - 55 amp
lightened flywheel
Vintage speed exhaust
New clutch and pressure plate
Starter motor
Gauges - tacho, oil temp and oil pressure
Tin ware - although may use my existing tinware

I will recomend a 1776 like your building.

I had a great little 1776cc motor but with a W100 cam, was a great little torquey motor with a resonable amount of power.




I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

depends on your budget and skill level.........powder coating is probably the most durable ;)

I think that you can get a higher amp alternator , think 75
you dont need a lighten flywheel on a street ccar.
comufire coil pak jobby works well , givees you spark like a commodore.

Cb Performance sell the Magnaspark digital dizzy aswell but they are probably more for freight than CIP1.I run the Compufire set up on the wifes beetle and have been very happy with it.Wassim @ VOLLKS would be the cheapest if you went the Compufire Direct fire setup.The leads are too long..cheap and generic for my liking so I bought MSD SuperConductor lead by the length and made my own.You can view my wifes beetle build up thread to get an idea of the setup if you go the Compufire setup..Either way still love your beetle and good luck with the new donk!.:cool:

the better alternator helps run all those extra lights and gauges , CD , ignition, etc

The other issue I am trying to resolve is I want a tacho, oil temp and oil pressure gauges just not sure what type of array I should purchase and where to mount them?
