Bug Off Cancer Drive 2011
Good Morning all,
This post is just to advise of another Bug Off Cancer Drive this year to raise funds for Australian Cancer Research Foundation.
This drive, with the support of Club VeeDub Sydney, will be done in conjunction with the Winter Break drive to Sawtell on 20 August 2011.
It is not a condition to raise funds to go on the drive, but if you are planning on going on the drive and want to raise funds for a good cause, then
this would be a good time to do it.
There is no minimum amount to raise. It's not a competition. Any amount raised is better than none.
There are no entry fees.
Those who are interested in being a part of the Bug Off Cancer! Drive fundriaser team, you can go to:
and register your interest. I will then confirm you as a team member and you can begin to organise to raise funds for cancer research. Those that want
to sponsor you can do so by going to the above website, click on your name and register their sponsorship of you. The funds donated will be against
your name, and go toward the team total.
If you're not able to go on the drive, and want to donate, you can by going to the above website, nominate a team member and donate to anyone of them
or just to the team.
After the Sawtell sector, I will be continuing north to Caloundra, across to Charleville, then on to Bourke, Cobar and back to Sydney.
If there are any other VW owners (or any car for that matter) or VW clubs who would like to participate in any part of the drive, please drop me a
line and we can put you in as part of the Bug Off Cancer! drive team.
Should you wish to follow the drive, you can follow on facebook. Just search for bugoffcancer
If you want to know more about Australian Cancer Research Foundation you can go to http://www.acrf.com.au
Thanks for your time.
Regards,
Norm

It's hard to believe that it's over five months since I posted about the Bug Off Cancer! Drive for this year, and we're just under three weeks away
before we set off for the drive.
Since the last post in February, there have been a couple of developments regarding the drive.
This year there will be a second bug joining me on the drive with a couple of work colleagues in Bug2. I'll be in Bug1 (this is the car I took on
last year's drive).
Bug2 is a 1966 Beetle that was off the road for 16 years, and I had worked on it over a period of four months to get it back on the road. It wasn't a
restoration as much as it was to get the car back on the road for the purpose of the drive. The work included a rebuild of the engine, new wheel and
master cylinders all round together with new flexible hosing, as well as fuel flexible hosing, tidying up of the electricals, new link pins and tie
rods, rekitting the carburettor and rebuilding an original Pierburg carb and replacing the Brosol that was fitted. The car is fairly standard and the
only mods are 12V electrics and the "F" series 1300 engine with 1600 pistons/cylinders and single port heads.
I was lucky that the car was complete and the floor pan work had been done before I purchased the car.
The car has been back on the road for the last month since being registered and is running well so far.
The other development is that I have been lucky enough to have QANTAS Engineering sponsor the drive this year. This has helped a great deal to offset
the cost of fuel. They have also donated prizes for our Trivia Night to be held on Friday 5 August. A BIG thanks to them and their support this
year.
The drive will commence on Friday 19 August from Sydney up to Sawtell as part of the Club VeeDub Sydney Winter Break. We'll depart Sawtell Sunday 21
August and make our way to Caloundra. Depart Caloundra Monday 22 August for Charleville. Depart Charleville Tuesday 23 August for Bourke then Cobar.
Depart Cobar Wednesday 24 August for the last leg back to Sydney.
If there's anyone interested in catching up with us while we're in your part of the world, drop me a line. Not too often you'd have a couple of
Beetles driving in tandem in the regional areas of QLD/NSW.
All in all, about a 3,200km trip over 6 days to help raise funds for Australian Cancer Research Foundation.

Good on ya Norm, I'll be on a run of my own at that time but will follow you on facebook, good luck.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross a road without being asked for it's motive!

This is more of a thank you to those that helped me out earlier today when "Stefanie" the second bug broke down this morning on the New England
Highway 98km east of Toowoomba as part of the Bug Off Cancer! Drive. She popped number 3 spark plug out of the head, insert and all. We tried to drive
it to Towoomba, but she finally died a few kilometres out. We towed it to Mike Sharp, but he was unable to help us due to him going away on holidays.
It was finally towed to Favourite Autos in Toowoomba on recommendation from Mike Sharp.
Anyway, a big thanks to Dave Birchall, Aaron, Matt Berry and Steve Carter for their help and concern.
The drivers of "Stefanie" hired a car so we could continue on our drive, and we left her in Toowoomba to be picked up at a later date after the
completion of the drive.
We couldn't make it to Charleville as planned today, and have settled in Roma for the night before continuing tomorrow on to Charleville.
Bug1 is so far so good at this stage, but not saying anything else. Don't want two bugs off the road.
Thanks again to the above for their quick responses and quick pointers.
Norm

Day 5 of Bug Off Cancer began in Roma at 7:00am and we continued onto Charleville. We were given a tour of Hotel Corones by the owner Jacquie. She is
a lovely lady who was more than happy to show us her hotel, which is steeped in history dating back to the early 1920's.
After Charleville, we made the beeline for Cobar. Only stopping for fuel and crew pitstops in Cunamulla and Bourke, we made it into Cobar just on
sundown. About 6:30pm.
Bug1 went very well, and sat nicley on 60mph all the way.
We have kept the VW flag flying, and many of the country folk cast enquiring looks at the lone bug in the outback.
Anyway, back to Sydney tomorrow and Bug Off Cancer! Drive for 2011 will be over for another year.
Regards,
Norm

Well guys, that's another Bug Off Cancer! Drive over for another year. Arrived back home at 7:30 last night. Covered a distance of 2175 miles or
3480km. A total of 271 litres of fuel used for Bug1. Not bad for a 1200 carrying two fair sized blokes and baggage and spares. That's nearly
13km/litre on average or 32mpg. The best was 15km/litre or 37mpg.
Thanks again to Club VeeDub Sydney and those that helped me out when Stefanie broke down between Toowoomba and Yarraman. I'll be back up in a couple
of weeks to pick her up and bring her back. Looks like another unscheduled road trip on the way.

This post is to send a BIG THANKS to Club VeeDub Sydney for raising funds at the raffle and show'n'shine day at Sawtell on the Winterbreak run and
allowing me to have the Bug Off Cancer! Drive as part of the drive.
If anyone is interested, here's a link to watch the trip on YouTube.
