carburettors


I have got a 1961 beetle 1200cc and at the moment it has the original 28 PICT carby on it, but i dont think it is the best as the engine hesitates on acceleration. ( i have cleaned it out, its been tuned ect..) I want to get a new carby, which carby do i buy ?

The 28-PICT IS the right carb for your engine. What do you mean when you say it's 'been tuned' - in what way?

Does the accelerator pump work? When you open the throttle it should squirt a jet of fuel down the throat. If not, the diaphragm could be torn or the jet could be blocked. If so, it's a simple fix.

If it DOES squirt, then the carb is not the problem. Check that your vacuum advance on the distributor is working (suck on the line and the points plate should move) and there are no leaks. I assume you have the stock distributor and not a '009' - if so take it off and put the stock distributor back.

Have you done a compression check on all four cylinders?

Also check your valve adjustment, spark plug gaps, point gap and ignition timing. What condition is your rotor, your condensor, distributor cap, plug leads/ends and plugs?

As Phil has said, keep the 28PICT carburettor. It is as good a carburettor you're going to get for your engine.

I have a 1200 6V bug, and I wouldn't change any of the original equipment on it.

What distributor do you have? Is it the 009? If so, there is an inherent lag in these distributors as they are mechanical advance. Not vacuum advance like the original Bosch distributors.

Is the choke working? If not, it may be closing more than it should be, starving the engine of air it needs.

How is the float level in the carburettor? If it's too low, it may be shutting off the fuel too early (i.e. there could be a hole in the float).

How is the fuel pump? Is it pumping out enough fuel pressure?

Valve clearances .006" although some say .008"
Plugs at .026" to .028"
Points at .016"
Timing 10BTDC to 7.5BTDC

Yep, keep the 28. All good advice above. About the pump squirter, it should be adjusted and carefully noted to operate exactly when the throttle is first applied.
