A FRIEND IS CHASING A VW REAR ENGINE 4X4 AIRCOOLED

Does anyone know if they ever made a old 4x4 VW that has a rear aircooled engine 1960-1970?

He recons it was a Kombi but a 4x4 and aircooled.
I think he's talking about the a Syncro or a Caravelle, but he recons it was older than that.

Did they ever make a 4x4 beetle, cause he also recons he saw a 4x4 beetle in Germany?

the WWII Kommandur (sp) wagen was a 4x4 beetle and the prototype for the syncro was a baywindow kombi platform. VW Brazil also had 4x4 baywindow kombi prototypes of some sort.
