make sure You fill the gearbox slowly as the oil can back up and look like its full when its not....
mark on Your oil bottle how much oil needs to go in...
and make sure it all goes in...
until it starts to come out the filler hole then put the plug in fast.... lol
is that oil hypoid oil Ian?
Hypoid oil should be used as the differential is in the VW transaxle/gearbox...
75w/85 is a good oil weight...

Beetle box ???
Basically a good GL4 oil... Redline MTL 70W-80 is nice if you're feeling wealthy and the box is fresh, or for about half the $$$ something like
Castrol Syntrans (75W-85 that's pretty similar spec and price to the Valvoline that Ian's said above).
If the box is a bit tired and cranky then maybe try going up to an 80W-90.
Kombi boxes from what I understand need an EP (hypoid) gear oil...

You need to buy 5 litre bottle...
You will need just under 3 litres of oil to fill Your gearbox transaxle..
You could buy 3 x 1 litre bottles but it will usually cost more than one 5 litre or 4 litre bottle...
cheers
LEE

I'm watching with interest while my trans oil drains....had 80/90 in it, which was the advice of the person that built it.
A little off topic, but I recently changed the trans oil in my suzuki swift. Put in 80/90 and it became harder to shift, especially when cold.
So, I drained it and put some castrol VMX 80 in (correct for that car) and it shifts like a hot knife through butter again.
Wondering if I should try it in the notch?

I used Castrol syntrans hypoid oil -= synthetic oil $$$$$$
in My gearbox and only bought 3 litres... 3 x 1 l bottles..
synthetic oil has a bad habit of leaking thru are bolt thread stud etc it can....
75W80 is good weight of oil...
