WTB - Sydney, 12v 2 speed wiper motor
Hi all,
I am after a 12 volt, 2 speed wiper motor for a beetle. I really only need the motor and not the whole wiper assembly if you are able to help.
Only Sydney area at this point, so I can pick up.

P.S. Obviously needs to be working correctly, thanks. Returns to the park position after wipers turned off, unlike mine.

are you sure the motor is at fault, my wiper never did self park till I got the auto electrician to look at it for a completely different problem (it
stoped working altogether) now it self parks but somewhere along the way it changed into a single speed, anyway if you need one I've got one but you
will need to be quick as I'm heading off outa town Tuesday @ sparra fart.

Thanks for replying. I tried a know operating wiper unit with my new 2 speed switch and it self parked, so I can only gather that its the motor
(inside electrical cam thing).
Also, Newcastle is a little to far at this stage thanks. Your not heading out at a sparrows fart to Sydney, are you ????

Yep, training it to Central then from Town Hall to the airport, gota be at the airport by 8am. Have the wipers ever self parked, I'm trying to figure
out how the motor would be at fault, maybe it was wired wrong when you got it.
Maybe Tech Corner will get you an answer.

have You wired it correctly Kev?
what model is the wiper switch off?
is the motor a round one???
or the other one???
The 68 beetle has the other type of wiper motor...
two speeds and the shafts of the pivots are the same size as the early models...
and are just round... there is a grub screw in the wiper arms.
plus... the wiper arms are real spring loaded wiper arms.. lol
I hope You tested Your wiper motor assembly without Your fingers being in the way...
I tested mine in My hands.... fingers got jammed so I turned it off... and it kept going until it self parked...
with My fingers jammed tight.... Never will forget that ... lol
would have been less painful with no self park... lol

Kev, just incase you're not aware the 72 and later wiper motors are different in the self park circuitry.
The only way to make them work properly is to use a late steering column with the stalk type switch, they're not compatible with the rotary dash
mounted switch.
Low and high speeds can work but they wont park.
so you need a 68-71 wiper motor, if you're staying with the dash mounted switch.

Joel,
Thank you for the update. Yes, have a brand new 2 speed rotary dash switch and that would explain why the motor may not be parking.
Lee, you were obviously talking along the same lines as Joel.
So I need to chase a 68-71 wiper motor, Joel are you able to tell me the visual difference of these motors compared to the later ones. I will also do
a google search and see what I can find.

Yep, they're pretty easy to pick
The 1500 beetle (68-70) have a square shaped cover that clips over the motor.
From 71 onwards they all had round shape motors on a 90 degree angle to the one above with a small gear box on the end
the 71 motor which is the only one of this kind which work with the switch have push on terminal connectors on the motor
Where as the 72 and later with the column stalk switch the wiring is hardwired and comes out in a loom with a connector block on the end like this
The 71 is the one to go for if you can get one cos they use splined shafts to hold the wiper arms.
the earlier ones have a flat on the shaft and use a grub screw like Lee mentioned and are absolutely hopeless
I'm pretty sure I have one buried in the crap heap somewhere if you have no luck.

How do you mount the 71 model 90 degree angle motor to the early assembly ???

They still mount up in a similar manner, you would just have to redrill some mounting holes to suit.
Honestly though I would just fit the whole late assembly, we did it to a mates 63 standard from memory the holes in the body needed filing outwards
just a smidge if you dont cut and weld the frame abit shorter but atleast then you can fit the later wiper arms, they just needed shortening and
bending the other way so they park on the right.
A gecko sitting on the bonnet with it's tongue out could do a better job than 6 volt wipers arms.
If you drive more than 30mph in the wet with them rain-x is your new best freind.

Joel,
you definitely know your VW stuff and have hit the nail on the head. The motor setup I have is the same as your last photo above and the setup I
tried at Vintage VeeDub that worked was something like your first photo.
I have already filed the holes out, so ready for the latter style.
